  1. What is up with THAT? That is BS if I ever heard it. I wouldn't dream of telling a customer that unless there was something so obvious that it couldn't be ignored or disputed. I have seen a few trucks over the years with broken or loose axle shaft bolts that I know were not abused. So what was his next move? Did he call Ford Customer assistance?

  3. Well here it is fellas. This article supersedes TSB 07-16-1 to update the Service Procedure and Part list. ISSUE: Some 2003-2007 F-Super Duty, 2003-2005 Excursions, and 2004-2008 E-350/450 vehicles equipped with a 6.0L diesel engine may exhibit any one, or a combination, of the following concerns: lack of power, white/black smoke or a surge. SERVICE PROCEDURE Coking deposits inside the turbocharger turbine housing can impede vane response causing high or low instances of exhaust pressure. Unexpected exhaust pressure results can cause over-boost, under-boost, insufficient or excessive exhaust gas recirculation, or unexpected EGR valve position, resulting in these symptoms. This TSB is for diagnosis and cleaning of the variable geometry turbocharger (VGT) vane set and the center housing and rotating assembly (CHRA), and for replacement of a corroded CHRA.
  4. I had that tool kit out the other day because my service manager and the customer pre-diagnosed the truck for me - awfully nice of them don't you think? It came in for a check engine light but running okay. Turned out the HO2S2-1 wiring was damaged by the mis-routed shifter cable. Long story short, I didn't get to use the tool Jim, but it is funny how I too immediately thought of urine sampling when I first opened the box.

I wish I could remember the exact numbers quoted but one of the boys at the HotLine told me that it is normal for these engines to make a little oil but the severity was dependent on the usage and driving habits. I think the number was 2-3 quarts per service interval, say a 5,000 mile oil change interval. Comments like these trucks shouldn't be driven by people who are not hauling and or towing and that Ford wants to see people stop buying these things and using them as grocery getters. Idling and short trips will load these engines up and I assume this is what he was eluding to. Perhaps there is more going on with the regeneration process than we realize. So, what are we to think when we hear accounts like this or the ones that Greg has shared? I have seen a few oil changes that were a good 4 quarts more than they should have been... discovered this on trucks that were in for the excessive white smoke during regeneration issue. I had one that I drained 23 quarts out of the crankcase but that engine self destructed as I posted here. If some fuel dilution is to be expected then how much should we expect? Perhaps now we might re-think the usage of oil sampling and testing, on the 6.4L engines anyway. I don't have an answer for you but I might focus on the frequent regenerations first if I were you. If you can diagnose that and return the regeneration frequency to more normal numbers I would expect that your oil dilution concern will diminish.

  7. Alex, I have a few customers that play this game. Seeing clear distances of 2.4 miles, 15 miles and 0 warm ups tells me we may have pulled more than codes on the ride in to the dealer. the really unfortunate part is that it also comes with freeze frame data and powertrain information that has also been cleared that might have assisted in diagnosing any driveability concerns. I play fair as Jim put it so it really pisses me off when my customers don't. I do not feel that is a good enough reason to just blow the customer out the door however. I have never gone looking for a reason to void a customers warranty because that is not the right thing to do. My job is to diagnose the vehicle and make an effective repair. If, and only if I determine an aftermarket device has caused the problem then it becomes the customers responsibility. I can count the number of these instances in 20 years on one hand.

  9. Shit, who FILLS out the sheets? For years I did and for what? Nobody has ever asked to see them, have them submitted or refer to them officially. For the most part, I followed them for years and the routine is burned into my brain. I still refer to them for specs and to make sure I am not over looking anything because there are differences among the model years... but, but, but... are you guys ashamed of me? /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/blush.gif
  10. Years ago I had a customer come for something I cant recall, but the check engine light was on. Car ran great, out of warranty and the light really didn't bother him at all because he fixed it himself. Put a piece of electrical tape on the cluster he did. Yep. That what he did!
  11. This is something we have touched upon many times in that proper diagnostics makes all the difference. A fuel pressure test is not only the smart thing to do but if you follow the diagnostic routine a fuel pressure test is only step #10 on the performance diagnostic sheet. Since it only takes a couple of minutes to set up, why wouldn't you check fuel pressure???
  12. Who is telling you to remove head bolts? As per the shop manual, removal of any head bolt requires replacing the head gasket.
  13. Let me ask this, how would we know what is being put into the fuel tank? Is B-5, B-20 or even B-100 noticeably different than straight diesel fuel?
  14. Couldn't tell ya Larry, I have never needed to shim a CMP sensor.
  15. Ahhhh but Americans love shiny gimmicky things don't cha know? On proofread and edit: One of the guys I work with had a 1974 pick up that had that storage compartment in the bed.

No diesel option until 2010 supposedly but cool to check out what is coming... http://www.fordvehicles.com/2009f150/ I also saw a picture of the 2009 Dodge with storage compartments built into the sides of the pick up bed accessed through a door mounted in the top of the bed rails, which are wider than normal.
  17. ... de-laminated fuel tanks leading to clogged fuel filters leading to low fuel pressure leading to damaged fuel injectors... I do have a greater concern about the quality of the "lamination" in some tanks but that is for another topic.
  18. Interesting. So to expand on this, when Johnny plugs in his Edge Juice to his 2007 F350 and gets caught by a roadside inspection for excessive smoke, who is to blame? Who will be prosecuted, Johnny, Edge or the guy who installed it? (probably Johnny did it himself)
  19. Some of my customers over the years had the product information/user manuals for their performance devices in the truck. I did read a few and all of them had a bold type disclaimer on the first page. The devices were intended for "off road use only." This brings me to the under hood label on these diesel trucks that states "... unless the device is an EPA certified emissions product under the clean air act , section 207 and CFR 85.2112 - 85.2122." So if a device is not EPA certified then it does not meet emissions standards as required by law... probably because they don't or less likely, the manufacturer couldn't be bothered or afford the cost of doing so.   21. Bruce, does Napa have any kind of a catalog? There is a limited number of connectors available to us Ford guys through our normal channels.
  22. Good luck. Many of these harness pigtails are hard to find or don't exist as repair parts. I myself have replaced a few harnesses over the years and salvaged the connectors. I might be persuaded to look at what I have if it comes down to it.
  23. The Ford information released states that this is a FULL SYNTHETIC oil. Mind you this is the sales promotion flier, we have yet to see a spec sheet... er, at least I haven't seen one yet.
