  1. Back on topic... the Diesel Stop was transferred yesterday and switched over to VBulletin from UBB Threads software. Gone is the familiar mustard yellow colors and in with a common look with the same advertising, new advertising and a couple of new features like "ride of the month" and so on. It has become less unique in appearance as it now looks like most of the forums already in existence, I wonder if the "community" will remain in-tact. I find myself completely disconnected from all other forums lately... as its all the same old crap, over and over and over again. Occasionally there is some sport in participating. I think I have just worn myself out with public forums for now. I belong to a dozen or so.
  2. Josh, are the modifications you are doing to your truck all Banks parts and are they all a part of a kit or are you playing with parts and technology that you have available to you? The reason I ask is to bring up Jim's question about NOx and emissions in general. If this is a kit, have the emissions been tested? Notice I didn't say certified. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif My point is to get a feel for just how much meeting emissions standards affects performance. No smoke is commendable but we also need to be mindful of the odorless/colorless gasses. Do you have emissions testing equipment at Banks? If you do could you perform a before and after test? I think that would be interesting.
  3. Look on page 43 of the 98 99.5 7.3 DIT Direct Injection Turbocharged Diesel coffee table book. It has the explanation and photographs. Oh, the book is 39Mb so it will take a few minutes to download depending on you Internet connection. The coffee table books are accessible on the lower right of this page under Tech Recourses.
  4. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/whattodo.gif DON'T DO THAT! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/whattodo.gif If you put dye in it and it springs a leak in the future, there will be dye EVERYWHERE by the time you get it. It has been my experience that it is better to install dye during the diagnostic process and catch the leak as soon as the dye begins to show. I call that pinpoint leak diagnosis. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif The dye left over after a repair can be diluted by discarding the coolant drained to make the repair which is also desirable to keep the coolant color from being too green. The Tracerline coolant dye will turn gold coolant green which can cause confusion where maintenance is concerned.
  5. Use the oxy/acetylene. Propane did not work for me as it is not hot enough. You will find that the glue that bonds the rubber mount to the steel plate will ooze from around the edge slightly. That is the point when you should stop applying heat and wait a couple of minutes and then wrench.
  6. I recently had a 6.4L with low coolant that I had already replaced the radiator on. The customer was complaining about the white smoke issue so I was looking over the entire truck. Noted low coolant and discovered that white coolant crud everywhere in drivers side of the engine compartment. Long story short, I used dye in the coolant and found both EGR coolant hoses leaking due to loose clamps. Should you discover the same, the clamps look impossible to get to but once you figure it out they are actually easy to get to and tighten. I resorted to dye because like you, I did not verify the leak by pressure testing. Put coolant dye in it and drive it. Give it at least one thermal cycle. If it is running down the frame rail it might just be the EGR hoses!
  7. It HAS to be better than dragging your nuts over the hood latch! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/crazy.gif

  9. We use Tracerline too. Works well and I have used it on just about every system now. The recommendation is one bottle (0ne ounce) per five quarts of oil... take that where you need to. For an engine I will use three bottles. One good thing to know is that the cleaner the fluid the better the dye will work. Really filthy engine oil should be replaced before installing dye. I figured that out after several bouts of not being able to see the dye. For fuel use it depends on where the leak you are trying to find is. One bottle is more than enough if added to the fuel filter housing... more in the tank but with fuel you don't need a lot because it is so clear and light. I agree with Bruce about the brighter the lamp the better visibility you will have but I do use a 12V DC lamp that works really well. Snap-On sells it; Blue Point #ACTUVLITEA8 For more information try http://www.tracerline.com
  10. Well I got the new coolant tube in without too much of a hassle but it still sucks. The icing on the cake is that when dropped on the floor, the new plastic tube sounds like it is made of steel.
  11. Yep, heat em up and let them sit a couple of minutes to let the heat migrate up the bolts and soften the loc-tite. It is one of those times where technique wins over. Patience here, just a few extra minutes can save you hours of wasted time fixing the nuts and the total frustration that comes with it. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/mad.gif
  12. Welcome to the DTS!!! Glad you like the site. I remember this topic and I was considering buying one of these topside creepers... but I just don't know if I really need another piece of equipment around... but I am still interested.
  13. Well we have done three so far. THREE!!! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/scratchhead.gif Where are all of these trucks?
  14. Thanx guys! That was informative info and I also added Norco to the directory.
  15. Really?! I must research the price of such jack, it looks like an OTC with a Rotunda sticker on it.
  16. Re-read it. I fixed it! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif
  17. I like that jack! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/thumbup.gif
  18. Most of mine were cured with the new calibration and were early build trucks. The last one I had gave me the P0196 ant had a stuck t-stat, the mangled one i mentioned. I think the key to diagnosing this is to look at the freeze fame data and the runtime as mentioned. Then drive the truck to fully warm it up. Look at ECT and EOT, they should be fairly close. On the one I had with the bad t-stat the EOT was at least 25 degrees (f) higher than ECT. The EOT never got over 160 degrees before replacing the t-stat. Edited to fix the acronym imbalance. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/blush.gif
  19. CRAP! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/banghead.gif I broke one. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/rotz.gif
  20. I caught this in the random member photo display. Posted by mchan68 - Mike? Is this a FORD packaged part? Part number?
  21. It is normally not easy to see but usually, if there is an injector leaking you will only see light pulses. I have only done the test three times. Once, nothing, another I "saw the balloon move" and the first time I did it the o-ring was so blasted the balloon filled up just to before the point where it would grow. I am not convinced that this is all that reliable because unless you DO have a major leak, you wont see anything. Someone here mentioned on another topic to try removing the fuel filter and look for air bubbles. I am still waiting to try that but it sounds like a better idea. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/2cents.gif This was the one, in a van no less. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/mad.gif It was missing on that cylinder and the two adjacent cylinders. This picture was from the article I wrote on it, arrow A is showing the missing copper gasket and B points to the blown out o-ring. This was the only time I have seen this on a 6.0L but I saw quite a few on the 7.3L, also early in production. Come to think of it, it has been a while since I have seen any of this craziness. To be honest, If I hadn't seen this and the balloon do what it did that day I would likely be telling you the balloon test is bullshit and doubt I will ever see that again.
  22. I remember distinctly remember that being the case from the new model training. Really stupid!
  23. In my shop there is an incentive in place that rewards productivity. It is a simple pay raise for every 5 hours over 40 hours in a work week. I think its a dollar for every five hour increment topping off at 60 or 65. We also sell /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/puke.gif BG services that come with the technician and service writer kick-backs. I think that is all I am going to say. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/rotz.gif
