There is a missing post here and I don't remember who made it but I accidentally edited it (instead of quoting) to the point where I could not bring it back by the time I realized my mistake. I totally apologize for that - it was unintentional because I just woke up and my coffee had not hit bottom yet. I don't want you to think that you are going crazy because the post is gone or that you are being censored.

Please stop thinking of yourself as just a guest. A member is a member and there are many members here who ARE NOT TECHS. All members have been personally approved by me and welcomed into this community. As I recall, you came to us on the recommendation of a member and I thought it would be good to have someone like yourself to share your knowledge and expertise regarding tools as well as discuss trucks. Seems to me that is what you have done here and I thank you! I wish you would do more. Since we can't buy tools from you directly I do not see anything you post to be a sales pitch in any way. In fact, I would like to hear about more tools and products that would beneficial to us, especially anything new being introduced. .

03 6.0 MISSES AT IDLE ONLY
Keith Browning replied to CISCO's topic in 6.0L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
What does ICP look like while its missing? -
Matt I did not think you would be affected by noreasters all the way out there.
-
An after pic would have been nice. Short answer is no, I haven't seen the Snap-On flush. I am not a fan of running all of that carbon PLUS whatever the cleaner is through the engine, then the aftertreatment system all at once. Think about this though. If you flush that EGR cooler, what is the result downstream? Ever see the lower intake loaded up along with the intakes. I can just imagine that crap coating that carbon and laying in there and crustifying. But I am making an assumption here. I will also assume that this cleaner is a flush and it smokes up the air/shop and takes several hours like the other flushes? Until Ford approves doing so I'll pass.

Pulley Tool Dimentions
Keith Browning replied to Keith Browning's topic in Tools, Computers and the Internet
LOL! I had trouble getting that back in place. I bent it (straighter) at least 4 times before it would line up with the hole in the cap. -
Holy COW is is frickin snowing here today. I can't remember the last time there was white-out conditions for hours. I am in Northern NJ right in the middle of this 'Nor-easter. We are predicted to get nearly two feet. I should probably fire up the snow thrower and make an early pass.

I was asked for some dimensions of the pulley holder tool that I posted about. More than one member here expressed an interest in making one of these so I took it a little further and disassembled the tool for better inspection to see what it was made from and how it was put together. The pictures are slightly crude and yes, I did not use a metric tape measure as this one was all I had at hand but it gives us all of the dimensions needed. A couple of observations: Looks like the threaded rod was inserted into a slot cut into the 1" flat stock and then heavily welded from both sides. The chain was connected to the flat stock with two drilled holes. The cap was stick on the pipe - I left it on as not damage it trying to remove it but the picture shows what is going on there. The pipe is flattened slightly in the middle to act with the flat stock to prevent everything from spinning when the handle is tightened. Everything was lightly lubricated. I think the pipe is about 1-1/2" stock

Engine Idle Shutdown & IDS
Keith Browning replied to Keith Browning's topic in Tools, Computers and the Internet
Well according to the Hot-Line the truck in question is not equipped with this feature. Fine. But, I assure you that if left idling, the truck completely shuts off in 5 minutes or so. Cycle the ignition and everything returns to operation... just like the trucks with the feature. I did not actually "verify" the concern with the intention of doing so but, the driver left the truck in park and running when he came into the service department and when I went out to the service drive the ignition was in run and the truck was off. So now I need to get this truck back in to actually see what it is doing. I am seeing a LOT of 2017 Super Duty trucks with all kinds of electrical concerns... -
Oil Leaks From Left Side of Engine
Keith Browning replied to mchan68's topic in 6.4L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
If it is blow by it probably does not matter which side it is when a poor fitting, or not stuck glow plug boot or two decides to vent pressure and oil laden vapors. From looking at the pictures something like that or as Bruce mentioned would make sense given the area and distance the oil mess is from the engine. -
I have a 2017 F550 that is a road department truck with a 6.8L that the Engine Idle Shut Down feature... shuts down the truck ans is should. In doing so, everything shuts off including radios, auxiliary lighting and safety stobes. No problem. The WSM says use IDS and follow the on screen instructions. I have done this before many times. Well, in IDS 104.02 it seems to be missing. Anyone see it and know where it is in the toolbox menu?

Let us know if you actually make one. In fact, make two and sell one to me! Especially the "loosen one turn" part. One of the guys in our shop had a 3.5L jump time from letting the crankshaft rotate backward.
-
The guys in my shop borrow this pulley holder from a tech in the shop. It is supposedly a Nissan special tool from quite a few years back. It is about 30" long with a chain type strap and uses a crank handle on the top to adjust the chain. Has anyone seen this before and know of a source? How about a similar tool or one with a strap? It has three really good characteristics. First, it is really easy to use - no fumbling. Second, it holds the pulley in both directions and does not slip. This is important with the crankshaft pulley bolt torque procedure for the newer engines requiring you to back the bolt off after initially torquing and seating the pulley. Lastly, to long handle provides enough leverage for the user to easily anchor when applying torque to the bolt. Take a look!

3.7L Timing Chain Idler Failure
Keith Browning replied to Keith Browning's topic in All Gasoline Engines
I dropped a 3.5L Ecoboost from one of these a while back. Aside from the ducting I don't recall there being much difference from the 3.7L. In fact, after looking at the pictures I took of the engine on the stand I can say it looks identical. -
3.7L Timing Chain Idler Failure
Keith Browning replied to Keith Browning's topic in All Gasoline Engines
I use Palmolive dish detergent when I wash the dishes. Actually, I am a frequent user of gloves and being winter time I use hand lotion daily to keep my skin from drying out. I have come to the conclusion that moisturized skin absorbs less oil and grime than dry calloused skin. -
3.7L Timing Chain Idler Failure
Keith Browning replied to Keith Browning's topic in All Gasoline Engines
Blue Point YA6490A. Says its for GM and Chrysler but it works on Ford 3.5L and 3.7L engines. The same puller is available from OTC for around $70 i am told -
3.7L Timing Chain Idler Failure
Keith Browning replied to Keith Browning's topic in All Gasoline Engines
There is PLENTY of room. Once you get the hoses and the water pump off the fan module slips right out the top. I cut a piece of cardboard and put it over the radiator to protect it. Since this is the first time working on this engine for me, I had a little trouble finding all of the cover bolts. Using a mirror helps. At this point I am cleaning off the sealant from the heads and block. PITA!!! -
2015Transit with a 3.7L TiVCT came in with a lack of power and the MIL illuminated. Has a P0017 in the PCM. Performed the pinpoint tests which led to a stuck bank one exhaust cam phaser. Recordings showed normal VCT movement but is was remained around -18 degrees. Got the front cover off and found the idler gear bearing smoked! How hot do you think that got?

2017 pickup box removed causing issues
Keith Browning replied to tonybullitt's topic in Body, Chassis and Electrical
Me, no. What is the SSM? -
I have to wonder if this is related to any EPA regulation or just Ford and one of their "better ideas" that make our life miserable. So I also want to know if we are EXPECTED to perform a drive cycle to clear these DTC's. For the moment, with the exception of the faults that cause a warning or indicator to show or a de-rate condition I am letting these roll out the door... as long as I am convinced the concern is repaired.

SSM 45920 - 2015-2016 F-Super Duty - 6.7L Diesel - Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) Unable ToClear Codes Using A Scan Tool Some 2015-2016 F-Super Duty vehicles equipped with a 6.7L diesel engine may exhibit an illuminated MIL with DTCs:P218F, P123E, P123F, P22A2, P2204, P207F, P204E, P2085, P204F, P202E, P130E, P203E and P205E which remain present after repairing/attempting to clear fault DTCs,using a scan tool. These DTCs will not be cleared with a scan tool. After fixing the root concern for the identified DTCs, ifany of these DTCs have status flags of: -08,-18,-48,-58 and -68. You may proceed to clear any accompanying DEF Fluid System Fault messages in Instrument Panel Cluster(IPC). Use Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) System Procedures in PC/EDManual Section 2 for correct drive cycles to clear DEF System Fault messages. If the MIL is no longer illuminated and the DEF Fluid System Fault messages are no longer present, no further repairs are needed. Struts are not something I replace often because I primarily work on trucks. Shocks when I recommend them are always Motorcraft because I think that is what we should be selling at the dealer - point is I have never had a problem with Motorcraft. Recently my Mother's 2003 Taurus needed rear struts and I went with the Monroe Economatic Quick Struts. They were a good price and the fact that they come complete with springs and bushings made them a winner in my eyes. The car rides fine but I can't comment on how long they will hold up because it was only five or six months since installing them. There are also higher levels and options from Monroe. Sounds like you already looked at them though.

I have had three... we are swapping in a 450 dually pick up... well, once the other dealer replaces the cover!
