  1. I thought it was like $250 for a new subscription but don't quote me on that. You see, I don't have one like most guys. The damn things have been on back order for about a year now. It seems to me that if you use your PDS then I would think it's worth the money, especially since you didn't have to pay for it in the first place! (yes, I am jealous) I always thought that if I had my own I would ask my company to split the cost for the subscription or even have them pay for it since it will be used on their customers vehicles. I supply the tool, they pay for the updates... fair enough... I would prefer to have my own because it will always be ready when I need it and it wont be all !@#!?$! up from careless co-workers!   2. Does anyone know if the cab tie down straps are an Essential Service Tool or it the kit something you have to order? And it comes with those nice rubber mats too! I still like my u-bolt clamps that bolt the cabs to the lift. "It ain't goin nowhere!"
  3. Ahhh, the ratty running 7.3 with no codes or reason to chose a direction. Most of those neglected trucks have some sort of injector degradation but I am also starting to see more and more older trucks with base engine damage. Broken air cleaner housings and loose induction tubes top my list. The turbo compressor wheel is a reliable tattletale that something is "amiss." (pun intended) If you have one of those cylinder cut-out boxes you can monitor mass fuel desired while cutting out your cylinders to identify weak cylinders. I really am mystified as to why the power balance test was removed from WDS and IDS for the 7.3L /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smhair.gif The test was probably taken away by the same guy that brought us the CMP tester... that worthless contraption! Getting back to Kevin's dilemma, a sharp random miss sounds like the UVH connector that Jim mentioned. If you are unsure what we are talking about, READ THIS for a detailed explanation.
  4. Thanx for the informed scoop. From what I am reading most manufacturers are looking at least a 100,000 mile interval with indications pointing towards 150,000 miles. It seems the key is how the vehicle is used is what will define the variances.
  5. Heres a good one. I knew this valve was stickin but there were no DTC's and the valve passed all of the tests doing it the old way. As a matter of fact, it only failed on the first try using the EGR test in IDS. I repeated the test several times and could not get it to fail but the voltages did vary inside of the green zone. The big red arrow shows the fault.
  6. Yeah integrity is a good word here because a customer's lack of it can lead to a lack of integrity in the diagnosis and repair of the truck. It's not my fault the customer lied. Personally, I would have brought this one up to MY manager who usually backs my recommendations and this one, smells a lot like a duck. Ed brings up a good point. CAN we flag a truck or deny a warranty repair? /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/shrug.gif I know we have refused to repair one customer's truck... who then removed his tuner and exhaust and intake... then went to another dealer two weeks later and had his head gaskets replaced under warranty... then traded the truck in for a new one. Another guy had rust and water in his fuel system, (there are pics of that one here on the site) paid us for the diagnosis, an new fuel pump and removal/cleaning of the tank which got the truck running... he drove it out and right to another dealer who replaced the 8 injectors he declined to have us replace on his dime. Now, I recall replacing 8 injectors in the past and having the claim declined. 8 injectors do not just fail on their own at the same time UNLESS there is contamination, which is not a warranty-able repair. ... and they call us "Stealers?"

I only glanced over the 2008 Super Duty NMT course and NOW I see the cab removal procedure. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/banghead.gif I also did a little snoop back at the service manuals which are now on-line and ohhhh-boy! By the way the cab off procedure is in SECTION 502-02: Full Frame and Body Mounting if you go looking for it.

  9. Is your IC4 cable USB or the older serial port type? And, because I can't remember if it needs to be, is the cable connected to the 9-pin connector on the truck? I don't remember if it needs to be connected but... I DO remember having to set up the cable to a comm port in the software. In one of the menus there is a setting. You probably just need to select a different comm port. I'll look at mine when I return to work...
  10. How about the suppressed screaming of four lettered words as I hop around in circles on one foot holding the other after jamming my toes on Dora's Magic Castle. The little one's think I am putting on a show and start to giggle and squeal. The "baby" has a plastic step stool that she puts at the foot of mommy and daddy's bed to climb up on. It is cute... Then again, I have been known to be a real prick for no reason at all!   12. I remember seeing this in some older trucks like the 7.3L and I recall that all of them had chips plugged into the rear of the modules. All of them had damaged PCM's but I could not tell you what caused the P0603. Faulty chips shorting the circuit board, damaged circuit boards from installation was the explanation given to me.
  13. Welcome to the DTS Kelly. I think most of us have a fuel tank story or two but many times the contents are unexplainable, if not unidentifiable. Some stuff comes from contamination caused by poor storage practices like construction site tanks and farm tanks. Sometimes its as simple as children or malicious individuals dropping stuff down the filler neck. Many techs have recently seen the inner lining of a fuel tank de-laminate and plug intake screens. I can't think for the life of me WHY any manufacturer would "line" a fuel tank. I once had a tree service truck that had wood chips and broken up leaves in the fuel tank. Maybe they ran the truck with the fuel cap off during use... who knows. Regardless of the source, you have learned the symptoms of "crap in the tank" which will help you identify it in the future when you see it.   15. Two questions for you: What web browser are you using? MSIE-7 has some glitches and FMC Dealer is not compatible with it and there are known issues. I have not read that this includes training courses but since they run in your web browser it makes sense. . Are you connecting to the Internet in a highly populated area? I have noticed over the last few weeks that Internet is very slow and inconsistent at times. With the Christmas holiday a lot of people are logged on, shopping, downloading music, playing games and using up bandwidth. This could also cause problems. My PC has narrowly escaped destruction several times this month because of this! I didn't notice any malfunctions while taking the course and I just checked again thinking that I missed something. Nope. There is only one screen showing the cab off on a lift and the narration plays properly. The next two screens are about the cylinder heads and injection system so I don't understand what you guys think is wrong or missing?
  16. YES! I have... after being off for ten days, then coming back and getting adjusted. But first, I had to download the IDS update at home and burn it onto a disk because our firewall at work won't let it download. The test is everything you should always have been doing all balled up into one automated test sequence. First, a few static KOEO checks and then several more with the engine running. SLICK! I didn't time it but the whole test, which passed on this truck, could not have taken more than two minutes! The truck didn't have any EGR problems, I was just anxious to try out the test. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif No more fumbling through the PCED or your notes for the specs. The 5-year old is going to pop any minute and the little one is too oblivious to know what's going on, but none the less, she is always happy and smiling.   21. Yeah, I saw that as well as the 2008 shop manuals come up in PTS but the links were down. I also caught the accelerator pedal recall that is coming.

  23. We finally saw three of these this year. I took some pictures of the last one which was really bad. Believe it or not, we got it cleaned out almost perfectly! I think driving the truck with the detergent in the system was a big factor in flushing out the sludge. The degas bottle had to come off again to remove the sludge that came out of the heater core. I recommend liquid Tide. I believe we drained and filled this system 15 times and it left with no oil in the reservoir. We lost a ton of time though. Warranty really sucks in these situations.
  24. I'll take your word for it but the LAST place I have seen, or should I say NEVER seen them was at my training center(s). But you have to understand, the 6.4L course I am about to take is the only Ford diesel training I have taken anywhere near the product launch. As a matter of fact, I took the 6.0L diesel engine repair course last year! This time I insisted as soon as it was available and fortunately my manager listens. I feel like the "chosen one" for going to this training at the launch and one of the very first classes! My luck? The books won't be shipped by the time I go Jan 23, but, I am keeping my fingers crossed!
  25. They rarely are. Any I have in print were given to me long after they were published. That is why I put the .PDF versions up on the site - so they are available. If Ford or international has any objection to my posting them here on the web site, I have yet to hear from either company. The files just appeared! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cool.gif I have a 4.5L book but If I want that in .PDF format I will have to do it myself, which I started to do but it takes more time than I have to spare right now.
