Strange start-up on 6.0
Keith Browning replied to Scott B's topic in 6.0L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
When was the last PCM reflash done and just how cold are we talkin about in Pennsylvania? The really quiet idle is what has my attention. Unfortunately I don't own one of these trucks so I don't get to see the seasonal effects like the owners do. -
It has been a while since I worked on cars and gas engines in general but I do remember those 4.0L heads having that problem with cracked heads. I think you are onto something here. Unfortunately it requires tear-down to validate this suspicion.

2008 Super Duty/6.4L Overview
Keith Browning replied to Keith Browning's topic in 6.4L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
Buddy, did you see the pictures in this link earnhartbuilt.com that Cetane posted? Look for the 2008 Duper Duty pictures. Theres a lot of under hood shots but they only show what is on the surface. Having seen the pictures in this presentation, I now know what lies beneath what we can see - THAT is what scares me! From the photos, I am guessing that the grille is attached to the hood exposing all of the heat exchangers when the hood is open. This provides less for us to lay on while working on them. That topside creeper is looking better. -
READ THIS!!! ----> 2008 Super Duty & 6.4L Overview It is a 5.5Mb Power Point presentation about the truck and the engine that magically appeared in my mailbox today. Lots of good stuff in it. If you don't have Power Point on your computer you can Google "Power Point Reader" and click the Microsoft download link for a free reader. Otherwise if you have trouble with it I have converted it to an Adobe PDF file which I can make available but it's 12Mb. Enjoy fellas! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/popcorn.gif

Fordstar material questions
Keith Browning replied to Cetane's topic in 6.0L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
Yeah, and by the looks of those photographs it looks like my pay is going up $5.oo an hour! -
I was given the impression or VERY STRONG HINT that Ford and Caterpillar have a deal in the works for engines, possibly to go into light duty trucks. No specific details at this point but the instructor at Caterpillar was very clear that something IS, or is going to happen in the future and learning how to use ET and SIS now will be to our advantage. (Ford TEPS guys) Not knowing what type or size engine this could be leaves a lot open to wild speculation and the imagination. The successor to the Power Stroke in three or four years? A smaller engine for the light duty F250 and Expedition? Fact or fiction this is very interesting indeed! Has anyone else heard of anything like this?

Caterpillar Electronic Technician Software
Keith Browning replied to Keith Browning's topic in General Diesel Engines
Well I just finished the SIS/ET training course so I am more familiar with the new version and the SIS web site. Now that I have access to pretty much all of the information I could need I am in much better shape to deal with CAT engines. I have another class on the C7 & C9 in two weeks. Two guys from the class may also be joining us here. Thanx for all of your advice, it was right on. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/thumbup.gif -
The problem for me is that I'll only see about two of these trucks a year so becoming too familiar is not likely. What little I have had to use it I agree that it's easy to use. I am sure it will be used today and tomorrow in school... better log-off and get in the car and go!

WIX Oil Filters
Keith Browning replied to Keith Browning's topic in 6.0L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
Amazing how that seems to happen a lot! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/hammer2.gif The gage and the ICP concerns are not related obviously but was the customer concerned with the gage at all or was this something you happened to notice? -
New or additional information is always good! I guess this puts merit to the confusion and a little more attention needs to be put toward spreading the word about the change. There was an announcement and a TSB as listed here but I wonder what the aftermarket world has heard about this change?

I am off to CAT for training twice this month. Hope I learn something this time but I am sure that I will have many questions.

Drive shaft bolts
Keith Browning replied to Jwebb1981's topic in Driveline: Transmissions, Clutches and Axles
I would also be concerned with the bolt holes and the threads if the flange has been loose for a lot of driving. Bolt threads too! -
There is yet another thread going at TDS about Wix oil filters. I have noticed two of my customers trucks doing the same thing: 2-3 second delay in oil pressure after starting. Neither customer services his truck at my dealer so I am suspicious. Just curious if any of you have seen this or have any info to add?
-
I am assuming that you replaced the ICP sensor for the varying voltage but did you replace the harness connector? I have found a few that were the culprit but I have seen more ICP sensors coming apart and leaking oil. In that case I automatically install a pigtail connector because the wiring insulation begins to swell. Use the repair pigtail from the 05E15 recall. Please do keep us posted!

ATF Recommendations
Keith Browning replied to blown99's topic in Driveline: Transmissions, Clutches and Axles
With that said, READ THIS THREAD. -
In addition to that I found a TSB that applies to your truck for your exact concern. TSB 03-4-5. The bulletin states to replace the instrument cluster. I know that they system and indicator works just like the Internationals you work on but I don't know how your clusters work. Ford Instrument cluster are a multifunction module that is not serviceable. You can order an exchange through a dealer but you will have to lay the vehicle up because the mileage is programmed before the cluster is sent to the dealer.

ATF Recommendations
Keith Browning replied to blown99's topic in Driveline: Transmissions, Clutches and Axles
You are probably okay to use synthetic Mercon provided that is what you use. Here is a quote directly from the service manual: Quote: CAUTION: Using a transmission fluid that indicates a dual usage (MERCON ® and MERCON ®V) in a transmission application requiring only MERCON®, may cause transmission damage. Use of any fluid other than the recommended fluid may cause transmission damage. NOTE: Refer to the fluid level indicator and the Owner's Guide for the type of transmission fluid required. Some fluid labels may indicate dual usage such as MERCON® and MERCON ®V. These dual-usage fluids are not to be used in transmissions that use only the MERCON® type fluid. These dual-usage fluids may be used in transmissions that require MERCON ®V use. -
GOTCHA! If you prefer you change back to the Canada avatar, I just changed the name. I was laughing pretty hard when I was making that one... just for you!

I finally made it...
Keith Browning replied to Jim Warman's topic in Tools, Computers and the Internet
My troubles with networking all of my home PC's is that when I tried to set it up they did not see each other. I could even do a search for a specific computer's name and it would come up blank! But now, months later if I go into "My Network Places" I DO see the "Shared Documents" folders for each PC. Each PC also shows when you click on "View Network Computers." I now see the difference between being protected from remote connections and from within a network, therefore securing both your wired and wireless networks is important. The confusion is why did I have those problems setting up the network and why is it all magically working properly now? I understand the theory of turning off printer and file sharing and that is why only the shared documents folders are accessible. I guess I wanted to have my cake and eat it too. I wanted full access to each PC from within my network but also protect them from outside connections and hacking. If I use a wireless/wired router that has it's own firewall is that the answer? Is that safe enough to trust and would that allow me to turn off file sharing? By the way, I am not using Windows Firewall either. I use EZ Armor from Computer Associates. Thank you for sharing you knowledge! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/rockon.gif -
I finally made it...
Keith Browning replied to Jim Warman's topic in Tools, Computers and the Internet
Quote: This is starting to p*ss me off. All I did was offer Jim some advice and it is turning into a geek pi**ing match. It was not my intention to take it there nor was I trying to debate you. I was simply questioning something based on my findings, experience and knowledge which is apparently far depreciated from yours. I was actually learning something from you which is what these forums are all about. I don't know what else to say... sorry? /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/shrug.gif Your input is welcome here and valuable to all. I actually had another question but now I guess I had better not. Perhaps you could write a post with general advice and instructions on setting up networks and Internet connections and we'll make it a sticky thread! This is information I am sure everyone could use. -
Obsolete part? Help!
Keith Browning replied to Keith Browning's topic in 7.3L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
Thanx Larry but it turns out my post is worthless as is the parts guy that helped the tech. Not only was he too freakin lazy to check, he also looked up the wrong part! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/banghead.gif -
IPR % Too Low?
Keith Browning replied to Keith Browning's topic in 7.3L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
Well, I am used to seeing 8-12% at hot idle but I was wondering if there were actual spec limits that would indicate a problem. I actually think the IPR is stuck but the tech is chasing a base engine problem with it for now, so IPR is currently not important until that is fixed
