7.3 intermittent stall
Keith Browning replied to tecanic1's topic in 7.3L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
Have you checked the ICP sensor for a biased reading? Since it's intermittent you might want to put the VDR in the truck and make some recordings to analyze. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif -
I heard a juicy rumor today that Ford is going to increase the warranty on all 2007 cars and trucks. I forget the details as to the time and distance or type. Sorry! It was a long meeting. This is likely to match the competition and help drive sales?

The Infamous Star Pattern?
Keith Browning replied to Keith Browning's topic in 6.0L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
Thanks for the good posts. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/thumbup.gif Okay, perhaps we are learning something here. At least I am. My thinking is that the harder an engine is worked the more the pattern will be evident. I did state that this vehicle is constantly towing so it is obviously well loaded most of the time which is in contrast to the many "Texas Cadillacs" we service. I also believe the size of the pattern also has something to say. Though this piston has been cleaned it shows the pattern largely contained within the bowl. This is more in line with what I typically see. The focus of the photo was the fact that the piston was cracked. I thought I had a shot of the entire crown. With a regular flow of engine work now coming in I am going to start taking more photographs of pistons to see what shows up. Submissions are welcome but let's limit it to 6.0L's. -

The Infamous Star Pattern?
Keith Browning replied to Keith Browning's topic in 6.0L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
Actually, I disagree that you will always initially find a pattern because most of the engines I have apart are not well running specimens. In fact, most of the engines I have had apart were so carboned up there was no visible pattern at all. But I will admit that once a light cleaning of the piston crown is performed a spray pattern does become evident. I have only come across anything this distinct once before now and that is why I ask if there is more to it. Take a look. If you think that this is about "normal" for a 6.0L please share your opinions. Like I said, I don't typically pull apart healthy engines. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif -
The Infamous Star Pattern?
Keith Browning replied to Keith Browning's topic in 6.0L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
I just shot a few pics... will have to wait until I get home to upload. -
I have read a lot of posts in various forums that a distinct star shaped pattern on the piston heads is indicative of the use of performance enhancing devices. Is there any truth to that statement? /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/shrug.gif We have a truck in with blown head gaskets on it's SECOND ENGINE. Very clear carbon star on all pistons. This truck is used to deliver travel trailers and is used heavily for towing. It also has a 4" turbo-back exhaust.

Bio fuels in a 6.0...
Keith Browning replied to sparker's topic in Fuels - Oils - Additives - Chemicals
Now we're diggin in. polymerize - to join together many small molecules called monomers to form giant molecules, called macromolecules, or polymers This is basically emulsifying. Like making mayonnaise! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smirk.gif Google polymerize and start reading. I found that water and pressure do come into play concerning fuel. -
F650/F750 Fuel Senders
Keith Browning replied to Keith Browning's topic in Body, Chassis and Electrical
I can say for certain that the new senders have the IH part number on the bag... inside the Ford box. If I am not mistaken, the Ford warranty for Medium duty trucks is 24 months/unlimited mileage. Of course the engines and transmissions all have their own warranty periods depending on what option the customer has chosen. -

Bio fuels in a 6.0...
Keith Browning replied to sparker's topic in Fuels - Oils - Additives - Chemicals
sparker, I think we all need to start learning about this alternative fuel because it will only become more popular with time. I don't hear much feedback from the manufacturers and their research which is a shame. What I have heard from Ford is the claim that high concentrations of bio-diesel has caused injector concerns related to stiction. Aside from that there is an earlier SSM or TSB warning of bio-diesel de-laminating the inside of fuel tanks causing fuel filters to plug up. There is mention of that in a few posts. Personally I like the idea but we need to learn a lot more about it. -
Okay Guys, I thought it would be a good idea to have a forum just for fuel and oil related topics. I see a lot of discussion about oils and now bio-diesel is a hot topic too. If we put such topics in one place they will draw more attention and be more helpful to us all. You can also share with us a new product or chemical you use - even the five-hundredth use for Brakleen! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/eek.gif As always, links and pictures are welcome but no advertising please. You may find me moving older topics to here as I find appropriate.

Turbocharger Reconditioning
Keith Browning replied to Keith Browning's topic in 6.0L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
Okay, I got one that is not too bad and cleaned up fairly well! There is minor pitting which I can't see trying to get out nor do I see the pitting as a problem. In fact, when I was finished the vanes and the unison ring moved very smoothly. That is a success in my opinion considering that three vanes were barely movable at all. The actuator moves freely to the full extent in both directions so this puppy goes back into service as an experiment. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cool.gif And no, I won't get paid for doing this nor will I mention it on the write up... but you will see an article on it. -
Turbo clamps-easy removal
Keith Browning replied to gasgasman's topic in 6.0L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
Love that tip. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/thumbup.gif (we do the same) Chances are that I or one of my co-workers will have to get it off in the future if there is a problem. Besides that it's just easier to get at and tighten. -

Bed plate reseal.
Keith Browning replied to pcassidy111's topic in 6.0L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
I am sure that you would love to be able to do this in your own shop! Rules are rules ya know. IF there was a defect in the block itself then a short block is the way to go. Whether we get a re-man part or a new part relies solely on what is available. The one I did was still new enough that the re-man suppliers had no rebuilt assemblies, just the new seed stock they got from Ford. I have never had any problems with a re-man diesel engine as of yet. But all of this is of course speculation until the engine is out and apart for inspection. You may just need a re-seal. I understand your concerns but I am not going to validate them for the given reasons. I do hope that you have a technician working on your truck that cares and will do the job properly. Sounds like you have been hanging around the TDS forums a little too much! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smirk.gif -
Bed plate reseal.
Keith Browning replied to pcassidy111's topic in 6.0L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
Quote: As always thanks for the help and information, I still have another years or so to learn about these engines before my customer's trucks start coming out of warranty. Don't worry Pete, you will still have a few hard lessons to learn - it goes with the territory. All but one of the bed plate leaks that I have dealt with were victims of poor machining or porous metal in the castings. There are many techs that have simply resealed the block and the job was fine. The seals where they meet the front and rear covers must not be stretched and must be assembled all at once with very clean metal surfaces and fresh silicone. Now the ones I did were still new and received new factory engines except for one. The one, I got a NEW short block because re manufactured stock was unavailable at the time. I removed the bed plate on the new block and installed new seals when I bolted on the covers to ensure a good seal where all of the seals meet. (just a recommendation) -
Fuel Additive Not 2007 Approved
Keith Browning replied to Keith Browning's topic in Fuels - Oils - Additives - Chemicals
Ummm, I am aware that the 2007 Super Duty is a carry over with a 2006 engine. That is a different topic altogether. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif I just want to know what's the deal with the product itself. Perhaps in the future we will see a Cetane and Lubricity improver? -
Fuel Additive Not 2007 Approved
Keith Browning replied to Keith Browning's topic in Fuels - Oils - Additives - Chemicals
I honestly don't know why but assume the stuff has sulfur in it. I don't think its all that confusing either. If a truck requires ULSD then the additive should not be used. As for the bottle and the sticker its the same bottle and label with an extra sticker with the warning. We received new stock a week ago. -
I am de-carbonizing another 6.0 and I charged out a fresh bottle of Ford's Cetane Booster& Performance Improver and discovered the following sticker on the bottle: Quote: This diesel fuel additive does not comply with federal ultra-low sulfur content requirements for use in model year 2007 and newer diesel motor vehicles or model year 2011 and newer non-road equipment engines. I guess this stuff has a lot of sulfur in it?

Got me $40 to start... 5 spins. I wonder how this is going to add up in the end. Those $100 combos look like they are gonna be rare!

Here's an amateur's shot from a camera phone. He caught this in Pontiac while driving around.

PERSONAL 6.0L FIASCOES
Keith Browning replied to Brad Clayton's topic in 6.0L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
Hmm, I do recall installing a new injector in the wrong cylinder because I was rushing the job so much and wasn't paying attention. I remember fixing the problem in even less time. Stupid is a good motivator! If you were around before we knew what was going on with the FICM harnesses I am sure you replaced everything on a truck or two too! Other Fiasco tales: Ever forget which way a one-way clutch was supposed to turn in a transmission? Yeah.... that must be it... what happened to 2nd gear? /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smhair.gif Ether is AMAZING stuff! When I was a younger, cockier Doc "just out of Med school" I ignored the warning sticker on the radiator support. Remember kids: just because six glow pugs don't work, one of the other two is likely to ignite the ether. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif The flames were intense! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/rockon.gif -
Stupid Customer Tricks - Part 3
Keith Browning replied to Keith Browning's topic in The Water Cooler
Is that like making battleship threats that your rowboat ass can't fulfill? Anyway, we like Jim's free expression of what he's thinking. The truth hurts sometimes so put on a band aid and get on with it! As for the FMC message boards and many forums on the Internet, they all edit and moderate with a heavy hand. That was my motivation for this web site... and the fact that you really can't have a professional or technical discussion without some know it all owner chiming in with some really stupid question or comment. Jayson, when you do eventually jump ship you will still be welcome here.
