7.3l oil pan replacement
Keith Browning replied to Brad Clayton's topic in 7.3L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
Well, I guess it comes down to preference and who has a good trick. I see you are in Vermont and wonder if your roads are treated with salt like the roads here in NJ in winter. The road salts are DESTROYING many oil pans here. Ca$h we are getting around 22 hours to R&R an oil pan for a 7.3L... plus extra time for any broken fasteners requiring machining or extracting. As far as easy is concerned I wouldn't go that far unless you are comparing it to a six liter. (thats six litre for our Canadian friends /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smirk.gif ) -
Has anybody noticed?

And then theres the guys with the, correct me if I get this wrong, "zoodad" mod. They drill holes in the front radiator support allowing direct airflow into the filter which also allows snow, leaves and rain to easily restrict the filter. I also don't see the possibility of any appreciable gain there either but hey, it gives a bunch of guys something to talk about. -
03 6.0L low boost issues
Keith Browning replied to sparker's topic in 6.0L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
Bruce, Somebody sent me a copy of the International service bulletin. I have a partially written article covering the cleaning procedure. I am waiting to get my hands on a turbo to perform the procedure and take my own pictures... I wonder how that will be observed by anyone at Ford that is looking on. If the International boys are doing it then it's newsworthy in my opinion. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/thumbup.gif -
Sure, I have cleaned a few but when the truck is under warranty and is giving you problems it's wiser to follow Ford's recommendation to replace it. The issue is the possibility of leaving a film on the sensor and if that happens you might end up chasing your tail thinking that "it couldn't be the sensor, I just cleaned it!" It's been a while but the bitter taste of creating new problems on my own is still fresh in my memory! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/puke.gif I tend to err towards caution these days.

7.3l oil pan replacement
Keith Browning replied to Brad Clayton's topic in 7.3L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
First, welcome to the DTS Forums! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/thumbup.gif I once resealed the pan in a 1995 F350. It involved removing the turbo and the fan then jacking the engine up. There wasn't much room to work with but I did it. Once I unstuck the pan from the block I had to remove the oil pick-up tube. The difficult parts are keeping the sealing surfaces clean as oil will run down inside the block and not ruining the fresh bead of silicone while reinstalling the pick-up tube. A 7.3L is not that hard to get out of a truck and I think removing the engine is worth the aggravation you wont have to deal with. Just my humble opinion. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cool.gif -
I just realized there was a link there. That is very impressive. I wonder if it will hold up. Is this car competitive?

UPDATE: It looks as though the MAF cured my P132B on this particular truck. There really wasn't much in the way of dirt as there was an oil residue from the crankcase vapors being blown back from turbo flutter(?) I'm guessing.

Mandatory Training!
Keith Browning replied to Keith Browning's topic in 6.4L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
I hope I'm not being paranoid but my Factory Rep was in last week and said that the new diesel is delayed because of problems, and I quote: "It's no better than the one we have now." I really want to believe that Ford is making an effort to ensure that this is not the case. He even said that when International had handed us the 6.0L it was a good engine before the Ford engineers gotten their hands on it. I've heard that exact statement before several times but I am not really sure what it means. What did Ford DO to the engine? (beside crank up the horse power and the RPM's) /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif I'm feeling a little bit queasy! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/puke.gif -

4.5L PSD with 6.0L Problems
Keith Browning replied to Keith Browning's topic in 4.5L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
Almost nothing is in the way. They are easy to work on except for getting around the front wheels and the splash guard assemblies which I found myself climbing over. The next time I need to "get into" one of these engines I am going to try removing the guards which look like they are only held on with a handful of bolts. I actually think these aren't bad trucks... time will tell. -
MAF. Inspect it and replace if contaminated or even suspect contamination. I have been warned that cleaning them can leave a residue resulting in the concern continuing. I guess the sensor is just that sensitive. Also, I had a customer with a check engine light on and a P0401 that we determined was caused by an AFE intake and a Banks 4" turbo-back exhaust. Thats the only time I have seen that code. I would also look for leaks in the intake system, before and after the turbo. My little 2¢

Sure Ed. When are you going to move back north and work in my shop? Or is the aroma of fresh horse poo too much to give up?

Just a friendly reminder Gentlemen [*]Please do not post "Ford's stuff" that is considered their corporate business and full copyrighted documents. I let some of the technical stuff like "parts of" FSA's, TSB's, and SSM's slide to be able to discuss and share information that is helpful - without revealing anything Ford does not intend the public to see. Remember, this is NOT Ford's web site but we still owe them a little respect. [*]Please do not be offended or take any action by a Moderator too personally. If a post is edited, it is because it did not follow the forum rules. If a post is moved, that simply means it was posted in the wrong place. Such instances are rare. In a year and a half of publication these forums have been joined by a great bunch of people and I am actually proud of the friendly professional atmosphere and quality of the posting - thank you! We could have seen this coming from a mile away. I haven't had too many driveability concerns with the LCF's and this was my second tow-in for a no-start condition. PCM codes: 333 & 335. Even though the Master Diagnostics PID Monitor DOES NOT show you actual ICP readings and I don't have that particular test jumper I was able to quickly determine that I did indeed have a leak in the high pressure system. Yep. You guessed it! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/rotz.gif
-
I ran into three of these when the LCF first came out. There was an SSM but my memory fails me as far as details are concerned but the failures were actually caused by the compressors or the pulley bearings in the one's my shop saw. All three had no refrigerant. Also see THIS TOPIC in Body/chassis/electrical.

Super Duty Cab Removal
Keith Browning replied to Keith Browning's topic in 6.0L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
Quote: sorry i fear change I was the same way. I can't imagine how you can torque those head bolts in chassis. We used to pull the engine for such repairs but after having removed a few cabs we can do so rather quickly. And if you are a young-un, heed the advice of anyone who's "got your back!" I'm not old but I have had problems with my back in the past. Changing the way I go about many things have kept me fairy pain free for a while now. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif -
Hey Jim I saw your pictures of the crash in your shop. What a mess. What was the official story and who is going to replace those bashed-up toolboxes? I would be freaking out about that!
-
This morning my manager handed me a few pages from a new Ford program. I only had time to glance over it and left it in my toolbox so my details are sketchy at best. I'm not sure if you would call it an incentive plan but it's for diesel techs and the winnings are from $5.00 to $100.00. There was a list of labor ops that are used to enter techs into the contest. Anyone see or hear about this?

Valve Train Concerns?
Keith Browning replied to Keith Browning's topic in 6.0L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
Well I got the head off and found a LOT of carbon on the piston and the valves. I also found one of the exhaust valve stems dry and rusty. I'll chalk the carbon caking up to a light misfire caused by the valve hanging but I am still replacing the injector along with the cylinder head. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif I recall this being a problem with 7.3's. HotLine engineer reminded me that if these sit too long when new this happens due to condensation getting at any exhaust valve that happens to be open -
Yeah, I am now seeing a P132B here and there and you are right in that they can be a bear to figure out. The ones that show up at the time the recall was performed were easy to figure out; leaking y-pipes (3) turbochargers (2) and now I am waiting for a MAF sensor to arrive off backorder. Good thing I don't eat bananas /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/puke.gif

Yeah, I thought you ditched us! Glad to see you are busy and not dead or in jail. I was drinking one night and decided to have some fun and changed the member status function. It now changes every 50 posts you guys make, up to around 2000. There are some good ones if I recall. Mine does not change because I be da moderator so I guess we will see what I did in good time. Other than that my shop is busy. We hired one new tech to make up for the guy out with a bad back, who will return tomorrow, coincidentally. Now my team is four guys strong and a new Rotary 15K lift is going in in a few weeks to accommodate the growth and new tech.

Quote: With your own PDS kit($2400 last I looked ) Look again, that kit on the RTTP web site was DISCONTINUED and just as I was going to buy one. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/mad.gif You can still buy a "kit" which has everything BUT the PDA which you must buy separately from Dell or H-P. As of today and the last two months that kit has been on backorder.

Super Duty Cab Removal
Keith Browning replied to Keith Browning's topic in 6.0L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
So now that I have been doing this for a while, I have employed different ways of setting the lift and securing the cabs - safety is my main concern. I use a Rotory asymmetrical lift and different cab configurations have different set up requirements. Getting the small cabs to balance has proven tricky. I began using blocks of wood with a channel cut into them but had no way of securing the cab, so I made up this little u-bolt system and it works really well. While not my prettiest invention it works the best. I am now going to make a new set to allow the use of my wooden blocks and this works with regular/super/crew cabs. -
I was wondering if your dealer had a drive-through for parts and service... (thinking people were just missing the entrance) or if S L Ford was in the middle of an intersection. What luck! Hope that "kid" is okay all things considered. So I was visiting your dealer web site and noticed that you sell campers and RVs? Thinking that was an odd pairing I realized that selling someone a nice 5th wheel could lead to adding a nice Super Duty to the deal.
