Okay! Now that the happy tingly feeling has worn off I can think straight again - What happened? /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/eek.gif Guy's you gotta slap me around the next time that happens, I might get away! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smhair.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smhair.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smhair.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smhair.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smhair.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smhair.gif Now I get it, I still don't like tuners because it's too easy for any idiot to plug one in and bust up a perfectly good truck.

Holy cow! I had a 2004 in for the recalls. Beautiful truck, white, jacked-up, custom wheels/tires and body trim. He had an Airaid intake filter, 4" turbo back straight pipe w/ no cat and an EDGE Juice tuner. "Go ahead, tap the up arrow on the left until the display reads 5. Go ahead, punch it!" He says. Black cloud of smoke, the rear of the truck squatted and the tires were just barely keeping traction. Scared the crap out of me at first but I hung on until I ran out of room. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/rockon.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/rockon.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/rockon.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/rockon.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/rockon.gif Now I get it, I still don't like tuners in the 6.0L, but I completely understand it now. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cool.gif

Navistar Master Diagnostics
Keith Browning replied to Keith Browning's topic in Tools, Computers and the Internet
I found the tool kits, buried in a pile and hidden of course. Our tools are all OTC labeled with the Ford tool kit numbers TKIT-2006-H and TKIT-2006-F. All of the hardware tools are in one box and go with the earlier released 6.0L kit. The second box has the break-out harnesses OTC: [*]418-601 - EGR Adapter cable [*]418-602 - Main Power Relay Adapter Cable [*]418-603 - MAF Sensor Adapter Cable I would like to have a test harness for the EP sensor and the ICP sensor. -
Tekonsha 6562 Trailer Emulator Bulletin
Keith Browning replied to Keith Browning's topic in Tools, Computers and the Internet
Got my new exchange tester today... just like they said and they paid for all of the shipping. Another reason to use the RTTP I suppose, they back what they sell and inform you of any product concerns or recalls. -
4R100 Locks-up in Reverse

Ahhhh haaaa! This must be what they mean by the term "cross flow" in the pump. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/notworthy.gif -
4R100 Locks-up in Reverse
Keith Browning replied to Keith Browning's topic in Driveline: Transmissions, Clutches and Axles
Thanx for the reply, I should have followed up on this one because I did fix it. A new pump and converter did the trick. It helped to know that in reverse and drive (1st) you have the most number of clutches applied. When this unit got hot it started to lose pressure just enough. I am sure that if allowed to progress it would have caused it to lock up in drive. They always seem to start doing this in reverse it seems. I still haven't figured out how low pressure causes the converter to lock up though /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/confused.gif -
John, First, welcome to the site, hope we can be of some help. As far as diesel certification goes, you will need to work with your Ford REP and even your FSE to advise you of what courses need to be completed. You need to work with them and your service manager to build a training planner on STARS-2. You will probably need to complete some basic electrical, engine performance and engine repair courses. There are a lot of web based courses you will need to complete before you are eligible for any of the classroom courses. You can find some of them listed on the DTS Main page. You can do those at home as time permits. As you meet the pre-requisite requirements for any classroom course take my advice. Enroll in the class even if it is currently not running which means that you will be put on a waiting list. Ford will not open a classroom until they have at least 10 students waiting! I think you might also need to be EEC certified. We are always here to help. I am sure that one of our instructor friends can expand on this. Good luck!

Caterpillar Electronic Technician Software
Keith Browning replied to Keith Browning's topic in General Diesel Engines
Since my software is not loaded on a company computer, our rep wont give us the product key to unlock the software. I went out and purchased my own lap top which I use for everything. I have it all loaded and working with the new cables. I am at a loss. I am pissed and the few customers I have with CAT problems get even madder when we tell them they now have to bring the truck to CAT. This is such a waste. Is there nothing that can be done? Will non-OEM software work with the CAT COMM adapter and cables? Any suggestions? /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/shrug.gif -
4.5L & F150 / F250 / Expedition
Keith Browning replied to Keith Browning's topic in 4.5L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
Tim, that first link looks interesting. The engine pictured looks almost identical to the 4.5L Ford is using in the LCF. The valve covers look different but the engine basically looks the same. I don't think that this engine would be used in the lighter trucks like the F150. When I was in training the instructor told me that the current 4.5L was much too heavy for those applications and the engine that was being developed was all new but he would not give me any other details. Hey, who knows? -
Welcome back! I have noticed your absence on all of the forums you frequent. Actually, all of the message forums, BB's and web sites seem to be a little slow this time of the year. To be expected... good weather, vacations and kids off from school. You should bring in a claw hammer to work and leave it in plain view. That will get them talking!

I have read that opening up the fuel lines to the cylinder heads on the 7.3L as well as the banjo bolts can have a positive effect on performance. Does anyone have any experience with this? Does this help a stock engine or is this modification really only help tuned engines with performance injectors or tuners?

CAN Compatible Scan Tool?
Keith Browning replied to ktmlew's topic in Tools, Computers and the Internet
And you can read more about it on the Internet at their web site http://www.autoenginuity.com/ They even have Pocket PC and Palm versions! Now, if this software could also re-flash modules, I would have it! -
To preface this post, read "Fuse Box Blues" if you haven't yet. I'm performing a PDI on a 2006 F650 and the HVAC distribution is stuck on the defroster position and the ABS light is on. Long story short, the vacuum pump and the ABS relay use fuse F2.24 which a body company had tapped into to add a trailer brake controller. No problem, and they actually began using the fuse taps that we recommended to them. (We have charged them many times to repair damaged fuse panels caused by their fuse taps) Well, good for them I say it's nice to see that they took our advice... but the IDIOT that did the wiring jammed a test light probe into the fuse socket spreading the terminals nice and wide. I just don't get it!

Ford-LCF & International-CF
Keith Browning replied to Keith Browning's topic in 4.5L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
I was in the last class for the LCF in the North East. The Instructor stated that the entire west side of the Country was done and he was doing another round of classes in North Carolina I think it was. Anyway, he commented on all of the dealers that procrastinated and were calling to get into classes. They missed out until the Fall. For those of you who are waiting to get into a course, ANY course, get on the waiting list. Do not wait for the course to show up on STARS. Ford wont even schedule a class until they have at least 10 students on the waiting list. -
Smoke Testing 4X4
Keith Browning replied to Keith Browning's topic in Driveline: Transmissions, Clutches and Axles
Yeah, we had a 250 in that has had a long history of 4X4 engagement problems. So I look to my tech and ask him just how many hubs will be thrown at this truck before someone realizes that the problem is not the hubs? We monitored the system vacuum while operating the switch on the lift. All was good, the pulse vacuum system was operating as it should and there was full vacuum. So we thought to put the smoker to it and look for a small leak at the hubs that may have been causing intermittent engagement probs. Son of a gun! The inner seal on the left side started wisping smoke. The point is, even though you have vacuum, do you have enough? On this vehicle, we had a small leak, just enough to cause a problem but not enough to be obvious. -
Aside from the steady flow of recalls coming in, things in 6-liter land seem to have quieted down a bit. The only thing that seems to be a continuing pattern is EGR valves and an EP sensor or two. Even the customers aren't whining as much. Maybe its too hot! How about you guys?

Navistar Master Diagnostics
Keith Browning replied to Keith Browning's topic in Tools, Computers and the Internet
Unfortunately you can't use the WDS on the 6.0L in the F650/F750 and for that matter the new 4.5L in the CF/LCF trucks because they all use the International electronics. My only gripe with MD Truck is that you can monitor PID's and they list them all, so why wouldn't they make them all active? I just don't get it. And while I have your attention, can you tell us where and how we can get the break-out harnesses for our shops? They were supposed to be a few shipped to the dealers along with the updated interface module, cable and software. I have the diagnostic stuff but not the special service tools including the break out harnesses. I realize these are International tools but Ford was to supply the ones we will need. Forgive me if I am wrong. Thanx -
Boy, that story almost sounds suspicious. Two engines in one vehicle with the same major failure? Is it possible that there may be an underlying problem that is causing #8 to damage the cylinder? Anyway, be thankful it's not a van! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smirk.gif

Engine runs: ICP Disconnected!

Wowwwwwwwwwwwwwwww! And I thought FORD was the company with "the better ideas!" -
Looking for a vacuum leak in the pulse vacuum 4X4 system? Hook-up and crank-up the emissions smoke machine to the vacuum line at the regulator. You will find the leak! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/thumbup.gif

Engine runs: ICP Disconnected!
Keith Browning replied to Keith Browning's topic in 6.0L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
Yes, but what changed? It used to be that if you had an open circuit related to the ICP sensor then engine would quit running and would never start with it disconnected either. This would in my opinion represent a software change. I see an advantage to this. An electrical failure is not going to disable the truck and leave the owner stranded. Would you call this the diesel version of FMEM? You know, now that I think of it, these things would probably run better and a lot more reliably if fuel rates and timing were controlled using fuel tables alone and the sensors were used only to monitor the system... sort of like using the EP and ICP sensors like oxygen sensors to make overall adjustments to fuel trims and monitor the injection system as a whole. -

EGR COOLER FAILURE
Keith Browning replied to snw blue by you's topic in 6.0L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
I don't think that the coolers failing have anything to do with the heads or gaskets. I have had two EGR coolers fail as of yet and had to take them out and test them on a bench to be sure. You could hear air leaking when I put shop air to it. Neither were big leakers but both customers were complaining of a loss of coolant. I would put a cooler in it and let it roll! Got one of those C02 detectors?
