  1. Anyone do a set of head gaskets customer pay and what is a fair labor charge in hours?
  2. Changes to the PTS section have been running a couple of weeks now, I like it! Enter a Vin and you get a "vehicle session" screen with tabs that bring up EVERYTHING related to that specific Vin number. I give it a two thumbs up!!!
  3. Quote: The SM really frowns on any time spent on the puter looking for SSM's, TSB's, online manuals, etc. He doesn't seem to understand that you can't always pull the diag/repair procedure out of your ass especially the 6.0L! Sounds like your dealer could benefit from a new manager who better understands what it takes to get things done. Does he realize that if you had access to FMC Dealer in your service bays you will not only be better informed but quicker in the end? Maybe you can show him the light as you get more comfortable... being new and all.
  4. Quote: anymore questions about IDS feel free to ask and ill try to answer them the best i can Since you seem to know both, if I were to choose one or the other, which would you recommend? I already have a new laptop which you need to have anyway but is the IDS any better than PDS? I mostly pull codes, run self tests, A LOT OF PID MONITORING and module reprogramming and configuration. You can probably tell from several of my posts about this that I really don't want to spend $2700.00 until I have to and I want to make the right choice!
  5. Quote: How the hell are you supposed to get the harness out without killing it? I assume you mean either side but I always have trouble with the passenger side. There is a tool that slides on the rubber plugs, one at a time. That helps with grip but there isn't a lot of room for leverage. I destroy about half. And ahh, make sure you use a short bolt on the rear of the cooler where it is bolted to the manifold. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif Quote: Sorry for the book....you should here me talk! Thanx for the warning! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif Long posts are great, things are a little slow lately and not just around here. Peeps must be getting off their buts and going outside now that spring is here. Nice to hear from you! How's the new job working out?
  6. Quote: And that is why the diesel techs were "stroked" with the $50 certificate before it is announced. $50 certificate? Huh? /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/shrug.gif

  8. FordTechCA, Do you have any suggestions on how someone might get involved with BETA testing any of these new devices? How did you get involved and do ya "know somebody" on the inside? Can we get you to ask around? It's going to be a really hard sell to get my dealer to step up and start buying this stuff while the old stuff is still around. The real problem I see is that the "systems" require PDA's and computers which is the kind of thing a tech will probably need to get for himself. The sound of a "shop PDA" just sounds too unlikely. I bought a laptop and I wouldn't mind buying a PDA if my dealer would step up and hook me up with my own VCM. Sometimes you have to show them just how valuable something really is.
  9. So we have been kicking around the rumors about recall(s) coming for the 6.0L but I personally have not heard anything official from anyone at Ford... that is, until now. My zone rep was at my dealer last week for a Pizza lunch for us "mechanics" because we did well on that recent tire/brakes/battery sales contest they always run. By the way I did not get any ca$h because it's hard to sell batteries brakes and tires when all you do is freakin transmissions and engines!!! Any way, he ended the meeting with some vague news that there is indeed a bunch of recalls/programs coming at us for the 6.0L's and I suddenly got a sinking feeling and literally felt sick to my stomach /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/puke.gif

  11. Welcome back to the dark side! So... What did you pull the engine for and how did it go? Leaks? Mechanical failure?
  12. UPDATE! Failed lifter confirmed with engine removal and partial tear down complete. Took out the cam, the guide which was bolted down but cracked in half, oil pump and front cover. The oil pump gears have deep impressions of the needle bearings that came out of this lifter. I took a whole series of photographs. Look for yourself! I'll post the series of pics when I get a chance to edit and upload them. On edit: Photos posted, page 5 in the Photographs section.
  13. Quote: ON THE BED PLATES I HAVE DONE USED A THIN LAYER OF DIESEL SILICONE WITH NEW GASKETS You know, I thought of doing that once but decided not to, not that I had the chance because Ford wanted the engine. I also was worried that the fact that the bed plate and block are a machined assembly and that putting silicone might affect the integrity of the assembly by affecting the clearances of the main bearing journals. I do suppose that a thin layer if applied carefully couldn't hurt. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/shrug.gif ...but I am not an engineer. So to that I say if you can get it to work, so be it! We learned something.
  14. techanic I know how you feel. My first experiences with this engine were bed plate leaks due to poorly machined sealing surfaces. Look at page three of the photographs for what I found on two engines. If that is what you have, I have a bad feeling that you are not going to be able to fix this leak unless they have changed the gasket since I last did one. It's kinda hard to seal around those scratches and gouges with a rubber seal. The Hot Line said get new gaskets and reassemble it? Did they give you any other advice or instructions?
  15. I don't think anyone here as of yet has one that I have seen. For the money, it might not be until WDS really starts to fall away. I hear that support for WDS is gone next year so this new stuff is the future. I am surprised to hear that you cant get this stuff in Canada. What gives?
  16. Okay, it's crunch time and the owner has no problem paying for the repair. Aside from removing the cab has anybody done 6.0 head gaskets IN CHASSIS? I have seen pictures of it done but I can't decide if I want to try it or just pull another !?@#!? engine do it on a stand and get it over with. I'm in the middle of an Excursion engine replacement right now so I'm not in a great frame of mind. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/mad.gif
  17. Yeah, I believe we have passed the rumor stage about this engine. I do think that we will be hearing more and more about this in the coming year as information leaks and there are just too many people in the know and involved with this for it not to happen. I heard from my inside source at Ford that this engine is already in trucks and is being tested at the Ford proving grounds. There have already been tear downs and supposedly failures of some kind. This to me is good news that there seems to be great efforts being made to work out the bugs before the engine goes into production vehicles. And, the engines are being put in early mock-ups of the 2007 Super Duty. I have read that the 07 is rumored to be taking some styling cues from the Tonka concept and the interiors are getting a major overhaul with a considerable number of options. I'm sure that as others and myself hear things around the dealerships and training centers we will post it. I winder if Ford has considered dropping the Powerstroke name in an effort to shed some of the bad karma surrounding the 6.0.
  18. Sooooo... What kind of work are you seeing a lot of these days? For me it's FICM harnesses, EGR valves and transmission recalls along with the usual service work. For some reason I dont see much of any turbo problems that everybody seems to be claiming to have. What's in YOUR bay?
  19. Quote: THIS NEW CALIBRATION IS NOT INCLUDED IN THE B37.0 CD. You are going to have to update your WDS software and calibration files. I am also suspicious that you may have to manually download this calibration. If that is the case you will need to contact the Hot Line to get the file name. Either way, I would still contact the Hot Line to clarify this SSM.
  20. Yes, I am the same Ford Dr. and I can't help it. I'm hooked. I just hate it when people ask for help and they get bad information. Besides, I actually have learned a thing or two snooping around the Internet so I tend to want to give back. And if this site ever gets busy I will not have time for the shade tree guys that call us hacks. They aren't the ones I reply to any way.

  23. Your attachments are password protected meaning you have to be a member, I suppose. You can't add attachments on our bulletin boards but I have allowed images in posts. This requires the image to be on a Web accessible server and you simply add the address an the pop-up text box that pops-up when you click the "Image button" below. I f you want, you can email the images to me and I can stick-em on the server here and we can add them. Some day... If I can cover the small cost of running this site I might upgrade the whole thing which would include member photo galleries and other fun stuff. I had to try it just to be sure it works! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/thumbup.gif
  24. There are problems with injectors on the 5.4 3-V engine and possibly other engines. I have a truck in with a check engine light on that runs terrible. There is a SSM suggesting that one or more injectors may be faulty. I have verified that and my diagnostics found that this truck has four injectors dumping fuel. The Hot Line engineer I spoke with said that there are a lot of injector problems showing up on this engine.
