Way cleaner exhaust after delete removal...
Keith Browning replied to 66glide's topic in 6.0L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
Don't most people run a tune with an EGR delete on those things? It stands to reason that a stock calibration would react to seeing no EGR flow. Out of curiosity, what DTC's are in the PCM? -
MT-82 repair
Keith Browning replied to Matt Saunoras's topic in Driveline: Transmissions, Clutches and Axles
Good thinkin Bruce! -
I heard this third hand but it is interesting enough to mention. I hear Ford is kicking around the idea of offering an accelerated STST program where a Ford tech can attend Ford training at a training center in about an 8 week timeframe and get about 50% certified in one shot. I don't have any other real details. When I heard this it immediately sounded like a good idea because if there are dealers like mine that are forced to be hiring young guys out of schools it can get them a good start on training and make them eligible for warranty. The only catch I mentioned is that this has to cost a pretty penny. How do you retain these guys to get a return on your investment? I imagine the program would start with the basics - electrical, chassis, climate control... areas you would expect a green tech to start out doing. Personally I am all for it, at least try it and put it into action to see the results.

When making major repairs due to lower engine or catastrophic failures did Ford want any information or images? What hoops did you have to jump through?

aOdd exhaust valve failure
Keith Browning replied to Fordracer's topic in 6.7L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
This is sickening to see all of these failures. It's like 2004 all over again except the work is much harder. I have to start pulling one engine today and I have another that sounds like it's locking up in the lot. -
Good point on the green tech being more teachable. I have witnessed a young tech just out of tech school - was quickly soured by some of her co-workers. Yes, I said "her" as in a she. Once that negative thinking develops it's difficult to turn it around. I don't think it's impossible. In this case however... she was hit in the head by a small brake caliper that was not secured. Now going on 3-1/2 weeks off for a "concussion." I shouldn't laugh but I can't help it.

This engine has been showing us it's ugliness lately hasn't it?
-
Not to mention they are a pain to work on. Personally I hate when one of these rolls in.

Your company does not frown upon that? Our new owners (4 years now) realized that some techs were taking a lot of their own scrap metal and the "valet" who did our garbage and scrap metal at the time was pocketing the cash. Now, the owners have wised up and have a scrap metal dumpster that ALL scrap metal is to be deposited. I am sure it produces a nice check when it is taken. Every dollar counts.

Econolines will not. I looked in the Super Duty owners guides going back a few years and it shows the engine hour display but makes no reference/exclusions to/for engines. I have none on the lot at this time to check, will do so when I have the opportunity.

Didn't notice... what IDS version are you on?

Same breath? HAAAAARDLY. Bad management is a problem in, and of itself. The result is a workplace with a hostile environment which is not conducive to happy, long-term employment relationships which does bring us to why we need to find replacements... and the young techs being hired have nothing to do with this and from what I can see, they are oblivious to it. MY concern with the young-uns coming into my shop now is that they have no skills, no motivation and no sense or responsibility which is ultimately the reason they are shown the door. As a foreman I can teach skills but they have to want to learn and grow those skills. I cannot force them. I can motivate them with positive encouragement and show them what productivity will earn them. But they don't understand what that means! If they choose not to get off their asses, put down their cell phones or stop walking around the shop being concerned with what other technicians are doing, I can't force them. At this point I may break their balls a bit. I can, and do stay on their ass or turn them over to management to deal with if I am unsuccessful in getting one headed in the right direction. But, if a young man of say, 20 years, cant get his ass out of bed in the morning and show up for work (or come back from lunch for that matter) on time, every day, I can't force him. In my opinion, that was the job of his parents. Too late. So sad... and out the door they go. NEXT!

I think a lot of places are in the same boat - my dealership included. Due to a string of bad managers we have lost many good people in the shop and in the office. Not many techs worth hiring now. We went with the strategy of hiring young guys and training them. Not working out too well yet. Good luck with your search.

Leaking Fuel Return Hose

I duuno... you seem plenty knowledgeable, especially for a guy that has jumped off of the dealership wagon. You seem to keep up just fine IMHO. -
Leaking Fuel Return Hose
Keith Browning replied to Bruce Amacker's topic in 6.7L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
Interesting. But in the real world I imagine that a customer would be complaining about a fuel leak before noticing a power loss. Don't you think? Point is I doubt this is something we will ever run into. Good to know though! -
Has any one here returned a 6.7L truck back to stock? I have one that is missing the entire aftertreatment system and EGR system Who knows what else... Just curious as to that the cost would be. So far I have been able to get truck owners to restore their vehicles to stock themselves. Just wondering.

Anyone else seeing a sudden increase in power steering pumps either leaking or low in pressure? We had four this week alone - 3 2015 Super Duty and one 2015 Transit.

Blower Motor Speed Control Module
Keith Browning replied to Keith Browning's topic in Body, Chassis and Electrical
I did not have to remove all of the fasteners. I removed the one bolt on the inside, and from outside you only remove the two nuts and the one bolt (hidden by the plenum drain) that you can EASILY access. The heater box assembly will pull back enough to get your hand in there. I put a piece of 2X4 between the upper mount and the firewall to hold the box out. If the engineers had only given an inch more clearance behind that module none of this would be necessary. Thanx for the tip Matt! -
