  1. The answer is that big submarine under the truck is not serviceable and costs too much money to just replace. It probably makes sense to clean it up and see what happens but I am sure there is a threshold where too much oil is simply too much. If it's just a little oil it will probably be okay. I would think that if it looks like this, it's probably done or it won't last very long.
  2. That SJB looks like it has some green corrosion going on too.
  3. When I was in technical school, the school was a part of a company named Mack Boring where they did all kinds of diesel engine machine work including a complete fuel shop with clean rooms and calibration tests machines. It was always impressed upon us during fuel system classes that the utmost cleanliness was important, thus the clean rooms. Now I see shadetree guys ripping into these injectors on filthy workbenches and using lint rags.
  4. Compared to drawings in a book the cutaway slides bring a better understanding to the hard parts found inside what are mostly non-serviceable components. For me, the picture of the injector really shows whats going on in the top of the injector with the spool valve and oil flow to the piston. It also makes it easy to "visualize" where and how stiction comes into play. As always, I love your cutaways! (old thread - ran into this one in my repairing of broken image links and I am enjoying a lot of what I am revisiting)
  5. The ironic thing about this scenario is that usually to diagnose this particular concern you have to fix the concern
  6. Don't argue with idiots. They will only pull you down to their level and beat you with experience.
  7. Snap-on's website does not have one yet. I wanted to shoot a pic but it didn't happen. If I had purchased it I would have shot one and posted it. Vince, did you buy one?
  8. Yep! My Snappy Mongor brought one in for me to see. I didn't pay attention to the price. Why would I buy it when a c-clamp and a socket will do the same. I already have those!
  9. Chasing down mis-placed images and editing posts I came across this thread. For Thanksgiving we traveled south to my sister's house and my wife was at the wheel so I got to do a lot of sight seeing so to speak. One of the reasons we were without power for nearly two weeks then was the sheer number of power lines down and broken poles. In a 10 mile stretch of route 206 where main power lines run there had to be 50-60 new utility poles. I was amazed to see that there are still places on that stretch where fallen trees are STILL being held up by the power telephone and communications lines. My guess is that it was decided to restore power and attack the major damage first and then eventually come back and clean up the rest of the mess... I guess that isn't happening or at least not yet over a year later. What sucks is that there are still devastated areas in NJ, NY and Long Island that are still wasteland despite sporadic rebuilding. Then there was the newly rebuilt section of the Seaside Park Boardwalk (destroyed by Sandy) that was recently destroyed by fire and of course that was rebuilt again immediately. Not sure how I feel about that but I guess the reasoning is that the area is vital to the local economy there - no boardwalk, no summer tourism and vacationers spending money. Tell that to the people two blocks in who's homes are still missing. Governor Kristie Kreme was all over it.
  10. Correct - you will only find a "J1939" network in the medium duty trucks, not Super Duties which I guess this is what we are discussing here. Since I work on the entire Ford line I will add that J1939 is in fact a Controller Area Network (CAN)The pinpoint tests for network diagnostics are pretty damn straight forward when it comes to circuits. As Jim mentioned, we need to keep things basic here and not make things more complicated than we need to. For anyone paying attention, IF YOU ARE USING THE VCM-2 it will still light up and look like it has power and is working (unlike the VCM-1) but if the 12-volt power to the DLC is not there the scan tool will not communicate with the vehicle and fuck with your head. Ask me how I know. Check the DLC power fuse first. If okay head to pinpoint test H in Section 418-00 of the WSM.
  11. Happy Thanksgiving to you all! You know that is lurking around the corner...
  12. Hmmm... I ran the part number for both the gasket and the vacuum pump on a 2011 F250/6.7L with 60,000 miles. "No coverage found."
  13. The real irony here is that the vacuum supply is required to operate the turbocharger wastegate and the EGR cooler bypass valve therefore technically it is part of the emission controls. Regardless of whether the vehicle has vacuum assisted power brakes or vacuum operated 4X4 locking hubs. All 6.7L diesels have these emission control but they all do not have vacuum brake boosters or automatic hubs. Go figure.
  14. I had mentioned one question the other morning: "Is there a way for techs to provide feedback on their products?"
  15. I was able to enable the DRL on my 2007 Freestyle by using the IDS special functions menu with the "code of the day" password.
  16. I hope that your head recovers. Have you taken the new advanced electronics course yet or have you done any serious diagnosis on the latest model year vehicles? The shit that is networked now is un-be-leavable! Window motors... door locks... holy shit! I hope you know how to use the oscilloscope because it is a must for diagnosing network issues now.
  17. Yes Brad, we did discuss this - any module can pull the network offline. I have had both TBC and clusters do this... I think the TBC is more common but if he is finding wiring issues he's probably better off following the pinpoint tests.
  18. Never gonna happen. Put 15 quarts in any Power Stroke and it will be over full. There are other examples. Not sure why anyone would be suprised by this.
  19. I recommend going to section 418-00 of the WSM. The modules you listed that you cannot communicate with are all on the HS-CAN network. The RCM only uses the ISO 9141 communications network therefore it would not be affected my a HS-CAN fault. This is probably the best place to begin.
  20. At first I couldn't make sense of your post then the 4000 hours hit me.
  21. For the record there are official "canned responses" to certain assistance questions. I do believe there is a place for them but I do believe some of the methods to answering questions is rehearsed or guided as well. My annoyance this time comes from a question about TPMS sensor capability between 2012 and 2014 model year Super Duty trucks. I just wanted to know that single answer. Simple enough right? What I got was everything BUT the answer to that question. I already knew that Ford does not officially support swapping wheels and tires even if it is OEM equipment from another Ford truck. I already knew to use the proper sensor activation and programming method as outlined in the workshop manual. I already knew to use the OTC activation tool... not the fob tool when training sensors that were not originally programmed to the vehicle. Sometimes dealing with other humans is far more difficult that dealing with the vehicles. Scratch that, it is ALAWAYS more difficult!
  22. Holy crap is it slow now or what?!?!? We started to pick up business a little in the late summer into fall but now it's dead. Cars and trucks. Anybody else seeing slow work lately?
