Fixing Bung Holes
Keith Browning replied to Keith Browning's topic in 6.4L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
Article published! I had to change bung to boss becuz that is the actual term for this part though I do prefer the word bung. A big Thank You! goes out to Jeff E for his contribution to the article and for supplying some bosses. MUCH appreciated. -
What kind of stunts does your dealer pull off to attract attention and prospective customers? Today my dealer has a monster truck show going on. The Raminator is there making a lot of noise and crushing a few sacrificial used cars. There is another local truck called Webslinger outfitted with 8 seats in the bed to offer rides around the venue. Free hot dogs and hamburgers and all the Chryslers, Jeeps, Dodges, Rams and Fords to choose from if you are in the buying mood. Hosting car shows is my favorite as that seems less circus like. Last year we hosted the Garden State Mustang Club. Our new owner's grand opening was a mini kiddie carnival and live bands. I remember quite a few years back the old owner of the company had Robbie Kenievel jump the parking lot at our Flagship location. Whatever happened to light up bow ties, clowns and balloons? I always thought that a thriving business relied on great products, excellent service and honest business practices. I guess we either have not reached that pinnacle yet or it's just not enough anymore

repeat oil cooler rupture?
Keith Browning replied to Matt Saunoras's topic in 6.0L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
The last failed 6.0L oil cooler I did seemed to take an unusual amount of flushing to get the system clean. I don't think that the Heavy Duty Simple Green (purple formula) is all that it is cracked up to be. In all previous repairs I had used the regular Simple Green and they all cleaned up fairly well. Also, if you have a heater control valve you need to be sure that it is opening during your flushes by turning on the heat otherwise you will have a lot of thick goop trapped in the heater core which will eventually come out. Learned that lesson on the very first one I repaired. -
You know... instead of Alfred E. newman I could make our friend Bill the default forum avatar.

If you have a huge leak closing the IPR will have little affect. Air testing is only part of the strategy and at times is inconclusive unless you go digging. If you are faced with this situation ask yourself what is the least intrusive part to access and inspect? That's right, the IPR. If it is leaking it will always either have the screen popped off the tip with the o-rings blown out or the screen has a big crack in it and you can literally see debris lodged in the valve holding it open. Other than that IPR valves are not a high failure rate item. If you suspect the IPR or you are just not sure, remove it and inspect it. If it looks okay then start removing covers...

Because 5 nuts would have been overkill.

Also, here in the U.S the future for doctors is not looking too good.

We have annual bi-annual inspections now - 4 years if you buy a new car o truck. It used to be annual but in order to save money and reduce wait times at inspection stations this was changed. Now that the economy is so bad the great state of New Jersey has all but eliminated motor vehicle inspections. Now all you get is a document check (license, registration and insurance) and a sniffer in the tailpipe. If they feel like it they might test your gas cap. It is a shame. I know that my Explorer is approaching a level of un-safe yet is had a nice new inspection sticker slapped on it. I know there are vehicles on the road in much worse shape than mine. Seems like the Liberals really don't care about our safety and welfare. Just our money. Nice to see someone motivated enough to speak up and write a letter.

I really doubt that is getting fixed

Injector Cup Replacement
Keith Browning replied to blown99's topic in 7.3L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
Technically you are supposed to remove the cylinder head. Now that you mention it this is a van which could make things tight. Never did this in a van. I don't think you need too much inertia to seat these cups so you might not need too much room. What if you use the 6.0L approach and remove the engine mount opposite of the bank of injector cups you are installing - this will tilt the head away from the firewall and facing up slightly more. Might give more room... -
Injector Cup Replacement
Keith Browning replied to blown99's topic in 7.3L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
It can be done with the right tool. Technically you are supposed to tremove the cylinder head which I think is overkill. You do need to take steps to ensure no metal shavings end up in the cylinder. Fluids can be purged afterward. Here is an adapter I made for use with the remobal tap. It is just a steel tube with a washer welded to one end that makes use of some threaded rod, a bearing and a nut. There are commercially available versions of this too but they are expensive. -
Wowwwwww! Looks like it went "no wheeling!" The interesting part of this is that the thieves stole an IDS to get this truck.

Fixing Bung Holes

I think I need to turn this thread into an article. -
I recall Cummins telling us that they were going to be adding another NOx sensor as well. The explanation from them was that under certain conditions the system can actually PRODUCE NOx if the internal temperatures got too high and it is better to monitor what the SCR is doing chemically. I hope that is right. It's been a while.

Kinda looks like it went through the piston.

Is it mental or physical or both? My experience has been that regular exercise promotes rest/sleep for me. People think that because we are on our feet all day and have a somewhat physical job that our occupation provides plenty of exercise however this is really not true. You do not necessarily need to "work out" at a gym for example - going for a brisk 30-40 minute walk, jogging or riding a bicycle 3-4 times a week minimum is not only good for a cardiovascular workout, doing so increases your metabolism, helps lower blood pressure, lowers blood sugar and it can help you relax and sleep better. We are not getting younger and all of these things are important. I also find that walking or riding my bike around the neighborhood does get my mind away from things that bother me. Being middle aged and recently diagnosed with type-2 diabetes and high blood pressure I have experienced the benefits of regular exercise. I sleep like a rock except when the wife is snoring in my ear. I rarely have to get up to go to the bathroom any more as I have learned not to drink a lot of beverages after dinner - I do drink a lot of water daily.

THis topic started out talking about people who had no desire or intention to enter this profession. Now, we find ourselves talking about people who ARE in this profession. Is it any wonder we are not held with high regard to most people?

One of the reasons I like my new shop
Keith Browning replied to Brad Clayton's topic in The Water Cooler
It is nice to see that there are still companies that do things like this. Not only that but they are doing it for CHRISTMAS! GASP! -
I just finished the Advanced Electronics course in Yonkers - I was paired up with two guys that had little interest in learning much at first. The mentality that has some guys rush through scenarios just to get it done and get out of there pisses me off as it is but when it affects me I can't have it. Day one I came back from lunch early and took control of the mouse and keyboard. By day two we were clicking along. Both of these guys were still taking the written test as I was walking out the door with my "certificate" and headed home. FYI: I aced the written and the hands-on.

6.4 degas/heater hose plastic pipes that you need to remove for stats.
Keith Browning replied to Aaron's topic in Parts
Why do you remove that pipe? The t-stats come out with it there -
Oooh I am dyin! I forgot all about Gizoogle. Here is what the DTS looks like translated...Yo be clicking this shiz right here! I love this! Over tha muthafuckin years playas have axed how tha fuck we remove engines from trucks. Da answer is dat it dependz on tha application n' tha engine we is rappin' about. This 2007 F350 is havin itz 6.0L Juice Stroke diesel engine removed fo' a funky-ass bedplate reseal. It aint nuthin but tha nick nack patty wack, I still gots tha bigger sack. Dat shiznit was decided ta remove tha engine from tha front rockin a engine lift bracket designed ta be used wit tha Navistar V-8 diesels (A.K.A. Juice Strokes) which can be used ta remove 7.3L, 6.0L n' 6.4L engines. Da bracket allows tha technician ta grab tha engine from tha front of tha block n' vary tha pitch front ta back. Cab off repairs have become common n' engine replacement be also one of dem thangs you would consider dat approach fo' realz. A 6.4L or a 6.7L engine has a shitload of parts n' systems bolted on ta dem n' bein able ta access dem all from any angle wit ease promotes proper assembly. With tha cab raised there is enough room ta lift a engine wit a cold-ass lil chain rockin engine lift brackets, n' you can put dat on yo' toast. Dependin on tha type hoist n' chain bein used a engine typically may gotta be removed from tha side as tha wheel well openin serves up additionizzle clearizzle fo' tha hoist boom.

The words you used are different than what is in the PCED as I assume you mean "Clear EGR Valve Adaptive Tables" using IDS? If so then you are correct in that the purpose is to remove and relearn the EGR voltages which will quite likely be different if a new valve is installed. But knowing that you are not someone who just pulls technical stuff out of thin air... I haven't performed this in a while. Is there something new in the service functions menu on IDS?
