This is a list of hard to find and oddball electrical parts that are good to have on hand. If you have numbers you would like to add to this list or see any part of this list that is incorrect or requires updating because the part number has been changed please PM me with the information and I will add it to the list. Explaination for rad failures
Keith Browning replied to Ficm's topic in 6.4L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
The current cause as explained from Ford is as follows: "Slow leaks at cooling system hoses/connections can lead to low coolant levels. Excessive hot and cold cycling associated with low coolant levels can cause stress within the radiator tubes, possibly resulting in cracks in the tubes." I say current cause because this has changed as hyper-extended thermostats were once blamed for this concern. Maybe this is still true but I can not locate THAT TSB anymore. Engine calibrations have been updated to include a thermostat monitor that seems to do a very good job at detecting thermostat malfunctions ad turning on the check engine light. The idea is to correct the condition before other problems occur as a result. And... I also think that the quality of the radiators leaves something to be desired. -
Terra Clean - is it a gimmic?
Keith Browning replied to Ficm's topic in 6.4L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
We did discuss this product HERE. It is just the latest of the flushing products that offers no real benefit at all. We have discussed many times that if you have a bad coking problem the problem is not your EGR and regular servicing wont correct the root cause. A properly running engine should not have a lot of coking in the EGR. The 6.4L in particular has no reported problems with EGR coking so doing an EGR flush on them is a complete waste of time and money. The 6.7L might end up being a different story altogether... -
Window Tint Testing in NC
Keith Browning replied to Brad Clayton's topic in Upgrade and Aftermarket Equipment
Holy mackerel! Do we REALLY need this? We have tint laws here in NJ too but I have never heard of let alone seen a window tint tester. Wow. -
Did it damage the point on the hood?

Thanx for the feedback Rich!

cab on engine out
Keith Browning replied to Brad Clayton's topic in 6.4L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
Sometimes the answer is so simple it's stupid! -
Sign of the times and a weak global economy. The numbers they posted as losses are amazing and you have to wonder why Ford did not make this decision sooner. Maybe Australian will now have to put up with the Ford global designs we are stuck with. I cant see Ford not continuing to sell products there so I wonder if they plan to import the same crap the rest of us have to choose from.

Wow! I never realized that until you mentioned it although the EGR cooler inlet is technically still on the hot side. The 6.4L with the EGR DOC seemed to have carbon under control for the most part. Think about it. How many carbon related EGR problems have you seen on 6.4's? ZERO for me and my shop... how about you? Now the big question is how big of an issue is this going to be?

That's a negative on Ford having the files... NETS connects to International for the files and as far as I know that has not changed. So if you have MD Truck + NETS + username and password that is all you need. Like I said, if you don't have a username and password or you have forgotten your information just run OASIS and contact the Hot-Line using the form. I had to and it didn't require a phone call.
-
Do you have a Navistar scan tool like MD Truck in your shop? You will need to download NETS from the Rotunda website and you will need a username and password from Ford... call the Hot-Line...

Take a look at the topic titled "P0401" in this 6.7L Forum. I personally have seem a few and none fit the criteria for cooler replacement as per the TSB... nor have continued diagnostics ever turned anything up. On every one now I ended up pulling the EGR coolers and guess what? PLUGGED!

Well, if he can somehow force the lifter out then I am sure the bore would be damaged. Maybe the lifter can he held up as far as it will go and the camshaft slid out allowing the lifter to drop out of the bore and be retrieved?

To me this reeks of sabotage. On these trucks the DEF tank and filler are well back on the truck away from the cab where everything else is accessed and filled under the hood. Clearly labeled, blue cap... but who am I to speculate. I do know it is not coolant and there is no ATF in the cooling system. For contamination like this to be sourced directly from this truck the trans cooler in the radiator would have to be leaking and filling the cooling system. In addition, the DEF heater assembly would also have to be leaking. Ahh, no. And if that makes no sense to you reading this, these trucks use engine coolant as a DEF heater - piped in and circulated in the tank, the dosing valve if I am not mistaken and around the injector.

It belongs to the NY State Public Library. Take it from there...

Pulled in a 2012 F650 with a Cummins 6.7L with amber and red engine lights on, engine torque derated. Long story short the DEF tank is loaded with automatic transmission fluid. It made it all the way to the injector. This is probably gonna get expensive.

Haven't had much time to noodle around the net lately but I visited the monkey house and the first topic I see is a guy in Texas looking for help with his 7.3L. "I don't trust the dealer" - so I am going to throw a few hundred dollars worth of parts at it and if that doesn't fix it I will ask a bunch of armchair mechanics on the internet. Brilliant game plan!

lmorris, did this problem start after installing IDS v84 or any of the 84 updates? Our IDS laptop was down for a while with a damaged screen. I repaired it and updated IDS before returning to the shop and the wireless is not working. Like you, the IDS recognizes the connection but will not communicate with the VCM II

Every broken rocker I have pulled off of a 6.4L had all of the rocker tips worn down, seized or missing. This causes the rockers to start operating with a tilt on them. If worn badly enough the lifters can hyper-extend. The last one I did even blew the rocker apart. The broken rockers are almost always broken out on one side around the fulcrum ball. I consistently hear that the rocker arm failures were attributed to poor maintenance.

cab on engine out
Keith Browning replied to Brad Clayton's topic in 6.4L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
That would make a funny Benny Hill skit. I could just picture some tech running down a hilly street chasing an engine on a stand with torque wrench in hand. -
Usually the O-rings are not THAT far gone with a hot no-start. That should be a plain ol no start!
-
Okay, I found a document that addresses this exact concern. I remember these instructions having mixed results but it it's worth trying. See the attached PDF document.

Oh damn! I remember running into this a lot about a year ago on both my IDS and our shop's. It's obviously a communications driver error but I forget what the fix was or even if there is a fix that you can effect. I vaguely remember it going away on it's own... I'll snoop around on PTS and Rotunda sites. Which VCM version are you using? Are you using the wireless? That is your PC's operating system?
