Gotta good one brewing

Something was brewing alright. A brain fart. I hate when I get shitty information! No pun intended. -
Shut Down Noise

Sounds like that "cow in a can" toy don't it? -
Well, this could have ended worse than it did.

Just like people, too much carb will make your engine get too fat. -

EGR and Cooling Fan Correlation
Keith Browning replied to Keith Browning's topic in 6.0L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
The fan operation was the point of my post. On my first road test and then running in the lot at high idle the fan came on... like it should have but then after several minutes it did not go off like every other truck I run like that in the lot. I let it idle, goosed the throttle and the fan stayed fully engaged. I shut it down. Tried again later in the day, fan still locked upon startup. Even though it was new I replaced it for that reason alone. Duty cycle was 0% when I checked it and the fan speed looked like it was correct. I thought about TFT - peeked at the PID and it was good even though the fan command was at 0% with the fan locked it seemed like something I needed to look at. A/C was off the whole time. It did the same thing with the new fan clutch but at least then I could command it on and off with IDS and it did not "stick on" when I shut it off. Strange one indeed. If I remember maybe I will ask my writer to call them in a month or two to see if they figured it out and what they did to it. -
EGR and Cooling Fan Correlation
Keith Browning replied to Keith Browning's topic in 6.0L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
Don't forget the EGR cooler is restricted on the exhaust side. It definitely needs coolers. For now I replaced the fan clutch, cleaned a ton of dirt out of the cooling stack and updated his mismatched module calibrations (has a new FICM) The guy is taking it to leave to return to Missouri on Monday. Hope he makes it. I wanted to see the oil cooler... -

Not to disagree about Darwin... but... if this was the case here then this kid's dad should have bought the farm working on a Studebaker or his grandfather working on a Model A. -
2006 Ford GT Supercharger drive belt
Keith Browning replied to mchan68's topic in All Gasoline Engines
Lucky bastard! Do you at least get to take the car for a test beating when you are done? You have to seat the belt properly you know! -
With regard to 6.0L engines I have read many times that disconnecting the EGR valve or installing a dummy valve can cause issues with the cooling fan and reports of engines running hotter than normal. I have never tested this nor have I had the opportunity to. But I also wonder if an EGR system failure can cause the PCM to act in a similar way if this is true. I have a truck in my shop, a 2005 6.0L with 260,000 miles that the customer has been seeing higher than normal temperature readings, almost at the "H" on the gauge but it never actually overheats or expels coolant. New pump, clutch, t-stat and I cleaned a lot of bugs and dirt from the cooling stack. The gauge (for me) never leaves the mid-range but the fan comes on and stays on. According to the customer all of this work was just done and the fan was on the entire trip from Missouri to New Jersey shutting off only once or twice. I was looking at PIDS on this thing and EOT and ECT were both under 200 and the fan was still staying on. I had a couple of DTC's related to EGR, one for the throttle plate actuator and a P0401. So I began playing with active commands and looking at things working. Long story short all of the moving parts and sensors work fine but IAT2 does not change. I removed the EGR valve and commanded it open, and it did. I then started the truck and discovered the cooler has no exhaust flowing through it but the port looks clear. Obviously the cooler is blocked... Any thoughts on a correlation here? I am perplexed.

6.7 egr cooler failures
Keith Browning replied to Steve Mutter's topic in 6.7L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
Bruce, the picture I sent you was a cooler out of a 2011 F350 6.7L that had an intermittent check engine light on. The code in memory was a P0401 with no codes produced by KOEO & KOER self tests. TSB 12-6-14 has us perform a key on engine running (KOER) self test and asks if DTC P2457 is present. If not, the TSB does not apply. But then you go ahead and perform the appropriate pinpoint tests and come up with nothing. Contact the Hot-Line and you spend more time performing more tests and come up empty. By this time the truck is already down 2 days and the customer wants his truck back so you clear the code and return the truck to service. A week or a month later it returns with the Check Engine light on, P0401 in memory. I have gone through this with three trucks now. I decided finally to pull the cooler anyway and what you saw in the pictures is what I found. I replaced the core and the truck is gone. I suppose cleaning could have worked but I don't know of an effective way to clean inside of the passages. What's more is we don't know what is causing this to happen to an otherwise healthy EGR cooler and engine. Running well, no wetness in the exhaust, no coolant leaking... -

P0401. Forget whether it passes the engine running test. They are clogging. -
IDS VCM2 on a Test PCM
Keith Browning replied to Bruce Amacker's topic in 6.0L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
On 6.0L trucks I reprogram and not start the engine all the time without any issues. I only turn the key on and it works fine. Out of habbit I tried the same with 6.4L and 6.7L engines and IDS calls me on it. I don't recall it causing any errors though I did have to start the engines. If you are worried that you will blank the module I wouldn't be as IDS will attempt to recover the module and then you can restart the programming. The battery in my IDS PC is shot... which is why I try to rush things sometimes with it unplugged. I know better. -
Have you ever programmed a Ford with your software? I would assume NETS is NETS and I don't see why it should matter if its an IH CF or a Ford LCF. Do you have a tech support you can contact?

Just passed a classroom course now I am down to one to complete the requirements for Senior Master. The way classes are filling it may take another two years for it to become available .

I doubt there is any relation between this issue and the recall but I am attaching the bulletin for you to read. If the starter is not energizing then why would you suspect the flywheel? Sounds electrical to me. Why does barring the engine correct the concern? Beats me but what ware you disturbing to do that?
-
I was sure that the FLYWHEEL is actually a FORD componant or at least at wit Cat engines it was as stupid as that sounds. A few years back I had a 750 with a broken ring gear. Cat did not pay for it nor did Allison. Finally got the claim paid by ford after a long battle. Just thought I would mention this - Cummins might be different and I am betting they are if there is a recall which i heard about last week but have found nothing on Ford's site on it. Maybe later I can check the Cummins site... Got the engine serial number?

Not only do they sprinkle the salt around, many towns now use brine. A nice liquid concoction that they spray onto the road surdace before precipitation begins. So now you could say our roads are basted as well.

Every fucking one I have done in the last 3 years has been rusty to some degree. 5 hours? Shit. I am lucky if I have one diaged and have the cab off in 5.
