Injector Stiction Repair
Keith Browning replied to mchan68's topic in 6.0L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
Interesting, but, sanding the spool valves? I would think that simply cleaning them would be sufficient. I realize 600 grit is pretty fine paper but I would be concerned about doing more harm in the long run. Obviously these guys are doing this and having success with it. As for doing this on a customers truck I wouldn't for several reasons... if it were my truck I would probably try it... but then again the injectors in my truck would never get sludged up in the first place. -
Here ya go!

I never gave this much thought but I have no idea what the builders of these diesel engines do with regard to assembly lube and or pre-lubing during manufacturing. I have yet to see anything resembling assembly lube on service assemblies. I have never read any mention of this in any of the literature. For that matter, looking through the service manuals, there is no mention of pre-lubing anything let alone what to use. For me, any assembly entails simply applying some clean engine oil to moving/mating parts, a little grease on the oil pump gears and cranking the engine a little before allowing it to start. In technical school we used a pressurized pre-luber that tapped into an oil galley plug. I have not seen one since.

Here is a screenshot of the oscilloscope showing the CMP signal in red during cranking. The truck is a 2005 E-450 with a 6.0L that has a long crank condition that varies from several seconds to as much as half a minute. It never stalls and otherwise runs perfectly. No DTC's. The harness was replaced about a year ago and who knows what else was done to correct this. The other dealer gave up and the customer has been living with it for at least a year. We replaced the sensor, checked the block and sensor bore for rust and I am told it was good. The sensor circuits were load tested as were the CMP-O and CKP-O circuits between the IDM and PCM which was a Hot-Line recommendation which made no sense to me as we verified a signal issue from the sensor wiring pre-PCM. Looking at the signal above with the low amplitude and dip of the leading wave, I sense and fear there may be an issue with the camshaft walking. Sometimes the signal flatlines completely and sometimes the signal is nice and strong. Opinions?

Oh it is legit Aaron. It's posted on the Ford website. Clicking the link to the class action website will give you access to the documentation which explains everything. I just LOVE the money distrubution... $12.8 Million to lawyers / $125 thousand to be divided among the affected consumers. Brilliant!

I am having difficulty figuring out what "video" you are talking about however the point is moot. When I click on anything that says "video" I get a message stating: "The video you are trying to watch cannot be viewed from your current country or location." Well excuuuuuuuse me! Jim, is there a Youtube link in the video or other way or link to share it?

Exactly Brad. THAT happened to me not too long ago. I had replaced coolers on a 6.0L and released the truck... My guess is that the small bolt (I presume came from the heat shield by the turbo) had been dropped before removing the intake manifold. It bounced around atop the intake vales for 4,000 miles until it wore down enough to slip through and embed itself in the #8 piston. Fortunately the engine was coming out anyway but we had to eat a piston and two valves. That was the first such incident I have had in my entire career and I hope it is the last. Like the title says, shit happens but you feel like an ass when it happens. My company donated the parts and I donated the time which I thought was fair.

JIFFY LUBE hello! Same shit, different sign.

Shit happens. But when it does, who pays for it? When it comes to "accidents" in the shop like a part gets broken by accident (legitimately) or when some debris or a bolt or nut accidentally fall into the intake of an engine undetected. These things happen and hopefully rarely. Now I am not talking about the guy that is constantly fucking jobs up For most of us who have been in the business an appreciable amount of time we learn that even the best of us, the cautious and the observant, eventually some type of disaster is bound to befall our career despite our best efforts to prevent them. So when shit happens to you or around you, who has paid for it? You? The customer? Your company? Insurance? I am sure there are some good stories to come.

Thumping noise from E-series 6.0l
Keith Browning replied to garyb's topic in 6.0L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
Sounds to me like a stuck valve ot other valvetrain type failure. An inoperative exhaust valve will produce a thumping/popping noise AND will cause multiple cylinder misfires. -
Oh, and yeah. She is delicious!

First 6R140
Keith Browning replied to Keith Browning's topic in Driveline: Transmissions, Clutches and Axles
Yeah. I pulled the convereter, the pump and the forward/overdrive clutch assembly by hand on the bench. Assembly will be nerly impossible without a hoist and engine stand. These assemblies are just way to big and heavy. I think the risk of damaging something and being injured his high id you don't. Fortunately the tool kits have hoist adapters. -
I finally had to pull and disassemble a Torqshift-6. Man, everything is big and heavy in that sucker! I think I made a mistake by deciding not to mount the unit in my engine stand but it will likely end up there after I clean the case and go to reassemble. If I had pre-read the WSM instead of reading as I went I probably would not have slapped it on the bench but what a fucking circus though: pull it out with a trans jack... lift it off with an engine hoist then mount it onto a stand. Maybe on the second one I'll have my act together.

We know what you mean there little fella! You are right though, if I saw one I would know for sure. Truth is I never noticed the cover -
Fuel pressure regulator
Keith Browning replied to Brad Clayton's topic in 6.0L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
Not to piss on your parade but in earlier kits the housing did not look like that. And you do know that there is a kit available that only has the spring and seals which is much cheaper? You don't need the housing technicially. Just sayin. -
Whine from engine
Keith Browning replied to Keith Browning's topic in 6.7L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
I wonder how many times the primary filter cap o-ring does not get replaced It's kinda out of sight and outta mind. I still see 6.0L oil filter caps with well aged flat o-rings. -
Ah! So it's a UNION test?

Actually I thought she did well in contrast to her prior year part time attempts at the big league. She was on the pole, stayed in the top 10 most of the race and finished in the top ten. I noticed that running 3rd in the final laps she did not make any move to break out. In her post race interview she stated that she was afraid to "go" in fear of being left out to drop back. Lack of experience there. I would have bet JR. would have stuck to her bumper and my guess is that he was waiting for her to do so. He finally did but it was too late if he had anything but he did have lep come with him in the draft. Another lap or two and who knows. My advice to Danika would be to take a chance if you want to win. A race like the Daytona 500 is a win or lose proposition considering the prize it represents. 2nd, 8th or 43rd... you didn't win.

That would be really cool if you would! If you make a copy be sure to black out any personal information about you before posting anythng if you do.

Rebuilding A 6.0L VG Turbocharger
Keith Browning posted a topic in Tools, Computers and the Internet
Rebuilding the 6.0 VGTurbo posted in the Ford Truck Enthusiasts Forums. Mike Chan posted this link in a different thread. I lke the write-up so much that I wanted to pin it here in this forum! Has anybody ever done this? Wondering on how long it takes. -

Sometimes even Captain Obvious can't see the obvious. I would say that relieving your stress at the level it is at is going to be an exercise in futility. Eliminating the sources of your stress is probably going to be more effective. I know what I am saying and it is probably not going to be easy to decide what choices to make and then seeing them to fruition. I am sorry to hear that you are in this situation. I myself have been going through a few very stressful years. When you have a family to consider and a home that ties you down making decisions becomes even more difficult and stressful. If I was single and had no anchors there would be nothing to stop me from picking up and going off to a different part of the country and try living in different surroundings and where life moves at a different pace. I am surprised to hear that the Big Angry Hillbilly is living in the big city. What if you move out of city limits? I wish you luck.

wireless vcm question
Keith Browning replied to Steve Mutter's topic in Tools, Computers and the Internet
I love wireless ans prefer it. -
I'm surrounded apparently and this is really a sad statement about our industry. This morning I had the pleasure of working on a 2009 E-Series ambulance with a 6,oL that had a lack of power and a hissing noise on acceleration. Root cause was a mis-placed and over tightened CAC tube clamp at the turbo that cut the tube. On the way in to access the tube all of the retainers for the upper plastic sheild were missing. Hold down bolt for the A/C liquid line missing and the high pressure connection was resting on the battery power connector, cap missing. All of the small screws for the harness bracket along the cowl are missing. De-gas hose from the intake manifold folded under the intake tube. The oil filler tube clamp left locked in the hold position (loose). The degas bottle covered with coolant stains, coolant on the air cleaner lid, coolant 3/4 gallon low. New FICM half shell - old calibration in the PCM and FICM. Here is the best part - the VGT actuator connector was destroyed so the technician decided some RTV silicone would hold it in place. I stopped working on it after replacng the connector- imagine if I dug deeper. The vehicle was at another dealership 3 weeks ago for head gaskets, oil cooler and EGR cooler. Still hard to start, still pushing coolant.
