6.7 with cracked exhaust valves
Jim Warman replied to Fordracer's topic in 6.7L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
I get the feeling that you might be able to get away with doing that with a 6.4...... getting an engineer to sign off on the practice would be something different. Some of you guys that have never worked for an independant shop sometimes miss out on some of the stuff you can "get away with". -
What we see is a strange noise from the front of a cold engine... Tensioner is one of those things we always look at. Can you say "pattern failure" boys and girls? AC tensioners fail on occasion, too but a more common concern is dirt in the AC clutch making noise.

Since they have a finite rev limit, I would think that valve float is something you wont see..... indeed - I don't think any modern electronically fuel injected motor is going to see valve float - at least not in stock trim. Having said that, I'd have to add the disclaimer that what I have said is in regards to "over revving". "Over-speeding" an engine.... this can be a horse of a different colour. Whoops.... Forgot about a "runaway"... So... yes - valve float can be a problem... albeit a secondary problem.... Not sure when I'll run out of cool smileys....

Not wanting to change the subject (but brazenly doing it anyway), on the few occasions that I do subject myself to the mind pap of network television.... It never ceases to amaze me at the parade of "heat and serve" "just like Mum used to make" stuff being advertised and sold.... Turkey dinner in a box? Gimme a break.... What next? "Instant water.... empty contents of pouch into a glass..... add 8 oz. boiling water... chill and serve.... makes one serving or two half servings".

Frozen pancakes? Is this something like canned asparagus? FWIW, I know that they do indeed make frozen 'pancake shaped objects'.... whether one would truly want to call them pancakes or not depends on the sophisticaton of ones palate.... Being an old guy, my mother (and my wife as well) would pour a scoop of batter onto a properly preheated skillet - rendering a delightful little confection known as a pancake, flapjack or crepe, as the case may be. Younger people watch their loved ones risk paper cuts as they open and dispense frozen abominations prepared in far away places by absolute strangers. "Make pancakes" is much different than "heating up old pancakes"....

Early build or late build? Working on a PSD without an IDS is a lot like trying to make pancakes in a toaster....

Another tech had a failed reprogram and, for some strange reason, released the car. Customer is already wondering if buying this car was the right decision... I started the process again at about 3:00 the next day and finished up about 9:00 that same day. In Fords defense - they do tell us that a "hard wired internet connection is strongly recommended". What really got to me was that the first programming attempt (by the other tech) was allowed by IDS using 70.04. The second programming session made me update to 71.01.

Matt... if it is a trans tech they are looking for, then it is a trans tech they are probably going to hire.... If you are trying to get more into diesel, then try to limit your searching to stores looking for diesel guys. The "unfortunately" part is that most stores are gong to be looking for guys with experience and/or certification. Not knowing what your current relationship is with your current store, why not get all of your WBT courses in 51 and 52 completed and see if that helps you on your chosen path? FWIW, changing stores for the sake of changing stores might not be in your best interests if you don't know the store you are looking at.

frightful.. and a fire would be delightful... Well, we've had a lot of snow this season... lots more than we would usually have and the news, for a few days, was burgeoning with collapse roof horror stories. The "carpenter" I hired to steer me correctly during the framing portion of my reno, left me with a roof that isn't quite up to code (and they call techs idiots... ). Last night the roof (bear in mind nearly all the snow has since melted off the roof) was popping and snapping like a bowl of popular breakfast cereal. Little wonder, when I woke up this AM to find the thermometer firmly stuck at -30C (that's -17F for you heathens). Just a few short days ago, we were basking in the tropics with +11C on one sunny day (nearly 52) and a few days before that -26C (once again, that be -15F). The 5 day forecast is calling for +4C come Friday. There is a local saying "If you don't like the weather in Slave Lake, wait five minutes". But this is getting redonculous. FWIW, a "normal" winter in Gods country will include at least one straight week where the temp doesn't get above -30C. What makes this so good is that this is usually cold enough so it wont snow. Now... you southern types - go mow your lawn..

Baffle kit The 6.0s biggest enemy is the people that drive them.... There is an overwhelming notion that diesel "like" to idle.

Ditto on track bar bushings and steering gear... Have someone move the wheel side to side with the weight on the tires... Feel both ends of the track bar. The steering gear on late 450/550 trucks isn't adjustable for mesh preload in the field. First, check the mesh preload over centre. If that feels acceptable (it may not be 'in spec' but it shouldn't have any "wall slap" either), then have an assistant rock the steering wheel again - weight on the wheels, and feel carefully at the lower sector shaft bushing. If the sector shaft moves side to side at all - replace the steering gear. Toe in.... if the front/rear weight bias is too high, giving it a skootch more toe in may help. Is this a 4X4? And does it have a steering damper?

If you aren't paying attention, the pick up can cock sideways and feel tight - and later on come back to haunt you....DAMHIKT! Why not dump an extra gallon of oil into it to see if that helps it prime - not that the lower pan is all that hard to drop down for a peek at the pick up.

The 2011s are a "little different"???? That could well be one of the shining understatements of the year...

Since the PCM is a termination module, you should be able to get a pretty definitive idea of what direction you are going by probing the HS CAN terminals at the DLC with the key off. You should see about 60ish ohms if all is well with the hi and low HS CAN buss.
-
Used to be that the PCM was the "gateway" module. Now the "gateway" is the body control module (used to be the SJB but if we can rename something and cause mass confusion.... why not?). This is why the IDS went through the initialization procedure - you'll have to start checking the HS CAN for the no comm concern. FWIW, the PC is a termination module. Section 418-00 has a symptom chart that directs you to PPT a for your concern.

Tastes a tad better, yes? Two things you can write in stone when it comes to cooking.... keep it fresh... and keep it simple

Indeed.. there is a fair bit of info regarding smokestack scrubbers available.. I can't see anything other than a third world country landfilling waste petroleum products.
-
The fluid you use will contain varying amounts of metals and friction materials... filtered or not, there will be an identifiable portion of nonpetroleum products... not to mention the ash/soot/ whatever stuff that will accompany this fuel choice. In the early 70s tetra-ethyl lead was banned from MoGas because it was released into the atmosphere in the combustion process. (Along with the problems it caused in the new catalytic converters). Ever since then, it seems that a lot of time has been spent in trying to find ways to circumvent clean air ideals... rather then finding ways to reinforce clean air ideals. I am trying my damnedest to uphold the spirit of any and all clean air legislation.... but why the fuck should I try if other people see that as a sign that they can "make up" for my cleanliness? Approved fuels are approved fuels... "fuck you I'm gonna burn whatever is handy" is another deal.

It would be interesting to see what is coming out of the tailpipe... No.. not somebodies opinion of what is coming out of the tailpipe but actual measured components....
-
Latest word I heard is do not replace any NOx sensors... Eatch OASIS.

So far, the only 6.7 heater complaint I've heard is about window fogging and only on one truck so far. The 6.4 can be a cold hearted pig at low idle. Considering that there is a lot of cold air drawn through the cylinders of an idling diesel and precious little fuel injected to maintain idle. Idle an engine outside in the cold and watch your EGTs....
-
You could always visit the monkeyhouse... those guys insist on burning everything except diesel fuel. You might define "hydraulic oil" a bit... Cat uses (or used in the past ) series three 10W30 engine oil in their hydraulics.... atf.... Univis or Hydraul (sorry for the Essop Petroleum references... these are the products I am more familiar with. Some of the major concerns with many things that might be considered as "alternate fuels" would include particulate matter generation and viscosity. I would imagine that the different combustion characteristics of some oil selections might require different injewction timing needs?
-
I recall that many old 6-71s and 8V71s came with a fuel shut off and an Emergency ShutOff (just a flapper valve that acted as a PAS). More features that succumbed either to advancing technology or bean counters wishes.

Work - the curse of the drinking class.... W.C. Fields is quoted as saying " I always have whiskey handy in case I see a snake.... which I also keep handy...".
