Injectors in an E Series
Alex Bruene replied to snw blue by you's topic in 7.3L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
If once upon a time you worked on gasoline engines, the old TFI module ratchet wrench works very well to remove the torx screws. -
Flat rate.

I think tightening them in the right sequence is more important than torquing. I did a cab on turbo and just tightened the inlet pipes with a wrench. I was somewhat worried about the end result, but the truck is a regular of ours and has had no exhaust leak issues.

LCF long crank and miss hot or cold.
Alex Bruene replied to Kimani's topic in 4.5L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
It isn't a recall. It's a TSB kit that comes with 2 port-plugs and both stand-pipe/check-valve assmeblies. They have added what looks like teflon gaskets beneath the D-rings. They seem to be holding up quite well so-far. I wonder when we'll be getting these for 6.0s... probably as far behind as the threaded STC fitting. -

We did get both at one time, but I haven't reflashed one in a while to see if it still happens. Testing for misfires is a total pain in the ass with MD truck. First of all, the auto-disable test will only run with a cold engine... but I do find most misfires that way with good success. Doing the manual test sucks. I had one with a misfire that I couldn't narrow down, hotline told me to make my best possible "guess" at what bank the misfire was on, and then replace all 3 injectors on that side. If the misfire was still there, to swap the 3 injectors previously removed with the 3 on the other bank. If the misfire was still there, then to replace the other three... yada, yada, yada... -
The CAT in the MD trucks is the C7, which is a 7.2L inline 6. The Cummins for 2007MY and previous is a 5.9L ISB, replaced by a 6.7L ISB for 2008. Also an inline 6.

We are a medium truck dealership. I am "qualified" for Cummins (for some reason they like to use that word instead of "certified"). I was on my way to Cat certification, but the brakes were put on that with one or two courses to go when Cat made the announcement that they are leaving on-road. Cummins is very easy to deal with. The QSOL website (the Cummins version of INFORD or FMCDEALER) is easy to navigate, always up-to-date, and their troubleshooting trees are very simple and user friendly. You can even look up and order parts. You would need to purchase a diagnostic adaptor which is not too expensive, but the subscription to INSITE (the Cummins diagnostic tool) isn't cheap. Dealing with warranty isn't too painful either. Training consists of a "binder" full of CD-ROMS that they call the Cummins Virtual College. Very informative and well presented, and in class is held at a local trade school, which is also convenient. We sub all our Cat work out to the local "CatHouse". They are a huge pain in the ass to deal with, and in normally turns out to be a pissing battle between Cat pointing a finger at OEM, and us pointing one back at Cat. We have a local truck dealer that is Allison certified, which makes us lucky since they are usually quite willing to help out.

E-series egr cooler removal
Alex Bruene replied to sdv4x4's topic in 6.0L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
Just loosen the intake with the turbo still installed. You have to remove the inlet pipes. So really, it's not much more work to remove the turbo... but sometimes we get lazy. -
You know what, Bruno... the only person that scares me more than Celine Dion when it comes to running the country is Bob Rae... you do remember former Ontario NDP Premier Bob Rae, don't you?
-
When I get a 7.3 Econoline with fuel in the coolant, I don't waste too much time diagnosing in chassis. I just quote to pull both heads and replace all 8 cups.

E-series egr cooler removal
Alex Bruene replied to sdv4x4's topic in 6.0L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
We don't even remove the turbo (anymore) when doing only the EGR cooler on an Econoline. -
Is it an "E" or an "F"?

Oh yeah... Bob Rae... didn't he do us wonders? /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/banghead.gif

Right, but every "average Joe" that sees those videos believes it... do we need to post "Bill Hewitt inaccuracies" videos on You-Tube now?? BTW, have you noticed some the the faux-pas on engine disassembly in the 6.0 video? -
My take on this isn't too much different than either of yours. I am a Conservative through and through. I feel this matter to be so childish, I just want to take my ball and go home. Celine Dion wants nothing more than to be in power. Must be small dick syndrome, or something of that matter. What I can't understand, is how a group of three parties that Canada did NOT elect can get in bed together and "take-over"... Do 3 NOs make a YES? Now, this "coup" could back-fire tremendously for the 3 stooges, as it seems the majority of Canadians do not support this threesome. The latest Ipsos-Reid polls show that if an election were held today, the Conservatives would steam-roll to a majority with 46% support... that would be the greatest majority government that we've ever had! I applaud the GG for making the right decision in this case, and hopefully cooler heads will prevail in the new year, and this "personal" attack on Stephen Harper will settle down (not that I consider him the BEST man for the job, but he is by far the lesser of 4 evils), and allow him the time and opportunity to do what we elected him to do. I, unlike Jim, hold a Canadian passport, and I also hold a German passport... so maybe a few years in the Fatherland might be in order, while I patiently await the assasination of 2 francophones and an idiot with a stupid mustache! And yes, I did enjoy Jim's musings as always /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grampy-jim.gif... and I feel a little better about life on Earth knowing we are on the same page... now, if we could only get Jim a citizenship, and a run at parliament... hmmmm... /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cheers.gif

This must be the video on the fabled "top end oil change", but since the video had been removed, one can only assume... It seems the worlds greatest techs (found at TDS of course) now put Bill Hewitt next to God himself... this was my response... I was certainly hoping to ruffle a few more feathers than I actually did, but I feel kind of "shunned" there because I may actually know something about diesel engines... -
Since I've been working 24 1/2 hours per day lately (and the "new" DTS website will not work on my work computers), I have not had the opportunity to ask this yet, but what does the ever wise James Warman have to say about the current political situation in our land?

Massive EGR Carbon
Alex Bruene replied to Keith Browning's topic in 6.0L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
I always make sure to have some type of hotline paper trail when I send an intake out. Normally they tell me to clean if possible, or replace if necessary. -
Sorry it didn't work out, Aaron. If it makes any difference, a friend of mine is the shop foreman at a dealer to remain nameless in the interior of B.C.... he knows of about a dozen guys that have taken a shot at the NWT thing, and most don't last 2 weeks. Don't feel too bad about it... if Ajax were on your way home, I'd invite you for a liver destoying experience... but it's about 4 hours out of your way... the wrong way...

Massive EGR Carbon
Alex Bruene replied to Keith Browning's topic in 6.0L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
I've sent intake manifolds to the local machine shop and had them hot tanked with great success... and, I have a friend that is a trainer for BG products, and he's working on getting me their product to try out... it is basically an injector that installs in place of the EGR valve and sprays a cleaner of some sort into the intake for "a few hours"... apparently it does an amazing job... maybe once I get it we'll know more... -
I've only ever spun the front ones... I just remove the headlamps and hold the nut with a big-assed pry bar.
-
Maybe we should call "hotline"... /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/eeeesh.gif

Almost started to like the 6.0
Alex Bruene replied to zx5chris's topic in 6.0L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
The compression looks low to me too. And, speaking of relative compression... performing a relative compression test with a glow-plug removed only shows a 15% difference... -
I was going to say the oven type, but I did a bit of checking around, and it appears it is a vertical shake and blow device. Similar to the one on page 34 of this file http://www.cumminsfiltration.com/files/aftertreatment_training.pdf I believe... just vertical instead of horizontal to not take up as much space.

I just finished another Cummins course, and as it turns out the main branch in Mississauga has a machine that it capable of cleaning all makes of DPFs.
