I have had only one 6.4 that needed headgaskets for coolant loss. You could see the grove in the head and the leak point on the gaskets

6.7 with cracked exhaust valves
Steve Mutter replied to Fordracer's topic in 6.7L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
What was taking the head off like? Is there enough room to do it in chassis? -
My old service manger is working at Jim hansen ford. He was the service manger but now I think he is in sales. He has been out there for about 5 years and likes it out there http://www.hansenford.ca/employment.php

sorry I ment that it has a wear mark in the head where the gaskets sits casuing a low spot in the surface. So we have a head coming but we had to get it from an out of town ford dealer

Why are cylinder heads for the 6.0 on back order? We have 6.0 cylinder head that has a grove in the fire ring area and needs a head. Both big wearhouses in Canada have no stock and are US screen shows no stock as well. What gives? do they have an update head coming out? It also looks like headgasket kits are low on stock as well.

new Duramax commercial
Steve Mutter replied to Steve Mutter's topic in Tools, Computers and the Internet
I don't get this its like the Ford does not even come close yet they have about the same power and the same weight of truck. There is something missing there. I think it's a little Chevy bias there is no way the Ford could be that slow -
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LeIYPx2HREk I think this is there new ad campaign. I never liked it when one company slams another in sted of just showing off their products. I don't think this is a good way to sell their truck, just seems silly.

STC Fitting destruction (2)
Steve Mutter replied to BLittle500's topic in 6.0L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
On one of the two trucks that I had a damaged rear cover was a service truck that they needed back on the road asap and did not have time to replace the rear cover or the branch tubes. This was a retail job. They came back later and I at least replaced the rear cover but at the time I just started the 2 bolts to the branch tube adaptor and then cranked down on the pump bolts till the pump would draw back into place. I guess most of the time when I have a stc fitting that has failed the branch tubes have not been that far out of place or cracked. -
Are you guys at international seeing lots of metal in fuel problems? I have see more then I would like to see.

STC Fitting destruction (2)
Steve Mutter replied to BLittle500's topic in 6.0L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
I have done two, all others have been bent back into place. I think you can say its common. I think somewhere at Ford they have a big container of rear covers they are sitting on till the price of aluminum goes up. -
Check this out. http://www.autoblog.com/2010/10/14/video-the-very-worst-kind-of-lift-off-close-call/#continued This is just scary!

6.4 push rod /rocker ?
Steve Mutter replied to batmantech's topic in 6.4L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
I had a 6.4 that showed signs of wear on the rocker tips and on the push rods. That tip should not be flush in the end of the rocker tip(I wish I had a picture to explain) I think when the clearance gets too the push rods almost falls out. If there is enough wear on the valve train maybe thats why you have funny relative compression readings. In the truck I worked on it had a lack of maintenance problem. Just something to inspect as well -
used up 6.4 liters on the lot
Steve Mutter replied to Brad Clayton's topic in 6.4L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
Manual check of compression. Then check the fuel rail for metal in fuel. It seems fuel injectors don't just fail on their own on the 6.4. -
Kelly I know what you are talking about with the turbo. I had a truck that had 20 inches of mercury at idle and like 40 plus at wot! I think it was the turbo but they took the truck before any other diag could be done. So I will really never know. As for your oil leak have you checked crankshaft end play?

fuel system problems
Steve Mutter replied to Steve Mutter's topic in 6.4L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
Well, all my parts are in. I put the order in jul 29!!!,the fuel cooler has been replaced every time so I think I am safe there. I looked at the pickup and don't see much. Its straight and air checked it and I did not find anything that way. I did find that the fuel lines that run from the secondary housing down to the hfcm had worn away the inside of the fuel line hold down clamp. Its Like what would happen on the right side fuel line on a 7.3. I air checked both lines but did not find a leak, both lines and both fuel line hold downs are being replaced. I am replacing the pickup as well. The stalling with 80 left in the tank is odd because every time I go on a road test after the repair the truck only has about 40 litres of fuel in it(around 80 kms to empty),the truck runs good and re starts hot and cold good so I am kind of at a loss for what is going on. If anyone has anything else to add I would much appreciate it. -
The car is a 2003 mach 1 4.6 dohc. all gears are noise free till you get to 5th,you can feel it in the shifter and you hear a metallic bearing noise, you can put it in neutral and the noise will still their, but shift into 4th and it will go away. Does anyone have tips for me when I do the tear down?

10B17 Fuel Economy Q's...
Steve Mutter replied to Aaron's topic in 6.7L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
How would you drive a truck that just got a power upgrade. I know I would being driving it hard to see if there was a difference. Maybe thats why there is a drop in fuel economy, people like the power. check this ssm out 21476 2011 F-SUPER DUTY EQUIPPED WITH LT275/65R 20E A/T OWL MICHELIN TIRES - ACCELERATED TIRE WEAR SOME 2011 F-SUPER DUTY VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH LT275/65R 20E A/T OWL MICHELIN TIRES MAY EXHIBIT ACCELERATED TIRE WEAR AT LOW TIRE MILEAGE (UNDER 10,000 MILES/16,090 KM). THIS MAY BE DUE TO HIGHER HORSEPOWER AND TORQUE WITH AGGRESSIVE VEHICLE LAUNCHES OR IMPROPER USAGE OF THE ELECTRONIC LOCKING DIFFERENTIAL (ELD) IF EQUIPPED (SEE OWNER'S GUIDE FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION). ALSO REFER TO SYMPTOM CHART IN WORKSHOP MANUAL, SECTION 204-00 AND CORRECT ANY ISSUES IDENTIFIED. IF NO PROBLEM IS FOUND, AND TIRES HAVE BEEN ROTATED ACCORDING TO MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE, REPLACEMENT OF TIRES SHOULD ONLY BE DONE ACCORDING TO WARRANTY AND POLICY MANUAL GUIDELINES. 6.0 loosing oil internaly and smoking
Steve Mutter replied to jbarnett31's topic in 6.0L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
What color is the smoke? I would do a manual compression test on the rest and check crankcase pressure. Check the back side of the turbo for oil and do the regular tests on the injectors. you know check fuel pressure, combustion gas in fuel rail and so on. if the turbo has let go don't forget to clean out the intercooler -
Just did one today, its hard to clean the rust off like they want and re paint it in .5. There are no parts and ford in some cases will cover a rental car for ones that are cracked, replacing the rear axle pays 1.5 !

I used to do cab off for 6.0 but now I like just doing in chassis. 6.4 is cab off
-
I had the same thing happen to me. The bottom of the injector cup broken do to a loose injector. I got lucky it did not damage the engine. I installed new injector and checked fuel pressure just to make sure and found nothing wrong. That was on the second reman I put in. The first reman I put in this truck came back a week later full of coolant in the oil. It really sucks being in that situation
