IH SFN 04-24 PN 1842906C92 Ball:1833830C1 1. Heat the fittings before removing them. They are Loctited in and removing them cold may trash the threads. 2. Torque to spec! 3. Beware success rate is not 100%.

Intermittent "Overheat" ?
Bruce Amacker replied to Bruce Amacker's topic in 6.4L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
I couldn't access the connector easily, and it looks like the harness does not run up the core support (but I did think about that earlier). Thanks! -
I had one in class today I couldn't figure out, it belongs to First Energy/Penelec Zelienople, PA. 1FDXF46R18ED18326 6.4 cruises on the highway for 30-60 minutes, temp gauge goes (almost instantly) to the right peg, engine derates severely to the point it will barely run and won't keep speed on the highway. Driver pulls over to the side of the highway, checks coolant (OK) not boiling, restarts truck, gauge goes to normal almost instantly (within 1-2 minutes of it being pegged), drives off and everything is OK for a while. Exact same scenario has happened 5 times in the last week, never before driving a minimum of 40 minutes. Truck is definitely not overheating. DTCs- EGR flow, P2291, P1000, passes all KOEO, KOER, HPP tests. Open the EGR and the MAF goes from 32g/s to 15g/s and EGRTO goes up 10 degrees. I'm suspecting a shorted ECT by the water pump or a shorted harness. It's kind of hard to shake the harness on this pig as I couldn't even get at it. Opinions? Thanks!

I built one years ago and I'll be damned if I can find pics of it. The cutaway didn't turn our really well because there's a little pin in there that is too hard to cut and couldn't be shown properly, and the parts don't lend themselves to a cutaway. The "true-to-life" cutaways and pics are more confusing than helpful sometimes. On the DTS website we have tech resources: http://www.forddoctorsdts.com/technical_resources.html This has a low tech drawing of how it works: Technician High Pressure Pump Guide For The 7.3 Power Stroke Engine 3.8 Mb The 94-98 7.3 PSD coffee table book has a high tech description and colored line drawings on pages 35-38, but they're more confusing than anything. I describe it simply as a dump valve dumping off excess HP oil. No power is 100% open,(no HP oil) full power is fully closed (HP pump deadheaded). HTH.

+1 on the STC, '06's are prime for this. If you're brave deadhead the HPOP by grounding the IPR return wire (pin 2 of the center PCM connector, yellow/red) while idling and if the STC is the problem it will likely fail as pressure should go to 4000 or so. Monitor ICPV, it should be about .24 KOEO, try disconnecting it and see if your problem still occurs (might rule out a biased ICP), or power braking it several times in the shop to see if the STC fails. Good Luck!

Solder Shrink Connectors
Bruce Amacker replied to ktmlew's topic in Tools, Computers and the Internet
I won't use them, I was burned by one of these years ago and it took many hours to find the problem. I remember it clearly- the FP circuit would go open only after the engine ran and warmed up the harness for an hour or so. It was one of these style connectors installed in the relay circuit under the hood and taped up real well in a Crown Vic cop car, City of Strongsville. We didn't install it, the city guys did, but we had to find it. The problem with these is you can't check to see if the solder actually sticks to the wire, and in this case it didn't. A real MF to diag...... I'm pretty sure we have discussed these here already years ago. -
Window Tint Testing in NC
Bruce Amacker replied to Brad Clayton's topic in Upgrade and Aftermarket Equipment
These testers have been around for a long time. IIRC, Ohio has similar laws and testers the cops use. Slightly off topic, watch your speed this weekend. I drove twice on the highway Friday and Saturday for a total mileage of about 50 miles. During those trips (suburban Cleveland) I counted 11 people pulled over/or troopers clocking on one day and 7 the second day. My wife went 2 exits yesterday and saw 3 radar setups. They are out in force this weekend! -
I don't know what's happening in Australia, but Ford is shutting down production there. http://www.news.com.au/business/ford-wor...i-1226648895882

The software I use and like is free, C Cleaner, and works well for cleaning crap off the HD and registry, and it has an uninstaller. My PC geek guy turned me on to it many years ago. http://www.piriform.com/promo/ccleaner-0...CFRSVMgodHRsAkg I usually download it here: http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/ I also use malwarebytes for removing malicious shit (not your problem, likely). Good Luck!

I often thought excessive idling might be a contributing factor in rocker arm failure due to poor oiling up top during long idle periods. What is the average MPH when dividing miles into hours? Did any of the other rockers show wear when removed, or just one fluke broken arm? Remember the oil filter only works on a warmed up engine, oil filters bypass up to 90% of the oil during warmup because you can't push cold oil through filter paper. Random thought- if you see flakes in the oil and mgmt decides to run it, would it be a good idea to run the engine 30 minutes on a mix of 75% diesel fuel and 25% engine oil in the crankcase to flush it, and then change the oil and filter again? Running a super thin mix would be filtered much better than regular 15w40, and the thin mix would not be detrimental if the engine were not loaded. (think of what lubes a two stroke MC engine, and if the turbos were not heated up they would be OK with the thin mix) Sorry for your pain, it sucks when shit like this happens.

Recommendations for hotel in St Louis
Bruce Amacker replied to Chad_Kelsoe's topic in The Water Cooler
Staying near the Arch is a great idea, she'll have plenty to do while you're in class. Cards are in town vs. DBacks, Busch Stadium is very close, probably walking distance, only a few years old, even if you're not a BB fan I think you'd like it. STL is a great sports town, voted the best baseball venue by players a few years back. The zoo also gets rave reviews if that's up your alley. -
Recommendations for hotel in St Louis
Bruce Amacker replied to Chad_Kelsoe's topic in The Water Cooler
I go to St. Louis regularly, just did 2 weeks there last month. I stay at the Hampton Inn on Oakland by the park 'cause it's close to my stuff. Do you want to be near "stuff" or near your class? I've stayed at the Hampton Inn down by the Arch, too, and I'd recommend that area. Lots to do by the waterfront, there's a nice restored historical district with outdoor seating at the restaurants, don't miss the Arch (sunset might be nice) and the Bud brewery, where the stables are as nice as a lot of churches. Like baseball? -
6.7 egr cooler failures

I'm thinking any "real" cleaning includes an R&R. BG products and bullshit aren't going to clean a clogged cooler. -
Wave form that got us a replacement engine.
Bruce Amacker replied to lmorris's topic in 6.4L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
I don't see anything in that waveform that wants me to condemn the short block, it actually looks fine to me. The only thing that's missing is the voltages (I can't read them) but if the voltages were low it would be probably be a sensor issue and not a reluctor issue. Here's a known good waveform: I'm looking at CMP initial sweep (up), CKP initial sweep (down), difference (14-14.5 pulses) and it all looks the same as mine. I'm assuming you're also on pins 30 and 31. The uneveness of the CKP pulse voltages (waveform amplitude) can be caused by RPM change (rough idle) because it's a PM generator sensor which gives more ACV as RPM picks up. Somewhere in my junk there's a waveform of a 6.0 with a broken tooth on the CKP reluctor which caused a no start with no sync. -
Capture 1- brand new ASUS netbook, Win 7, VCM2 wireless, backed out and retried and it worked. Caps 2+3, older Win XP Pro, no VCM attached. Thanks! Off topic: Was demoing the client's Modis to show him everything it won't do, 6.4 STFT's all OK under 3. Unplugged the Modis, plugged in an IDS, had one STFT at +11-12!

I got several errors in the last couple of days that I'm not familar with. Can anyone tell me what they mean? I think this one was trying to program a 6.4 PCM: These two were after installing 84.03 and restarting IDS. It would not start IDS, and I had to roll back the PC to an earlier date to uninstall the update. I reinstalled the update and it "seems" OK now. When I pressed the "abort IDS startup" button, I got this: I did have a live internet connection when this occurred. Any comments are appreciated.

Repeat FICM failures seem to be common, weak batteries may play a part in this....

Bruce Amacker replied to dieseldoc's topic in Driveline: Transmissions, Clutches and Axles
There was an issue on old trucks with harnesses rubbing but I can't remember the details. Anyone else? -
I looked in ISIS (On Command) and couldn't find anything. Do you have OC? Maybe Mark will chime in.....

6.7 egr cooler failures
Bruce Amacker replied to Steve Mutter's topic in 6.7L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
The HD fleets are cleaning them with some success in similar circumstances when they are out of warranty. Here is a presentation that was given out at TMC in maybe 2011 with a little bit of info: -
6.7 egr cooler failures
Bruce Amacker replied to Steve Mutter's topic in 6.7L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
OK, we have a pattern failure here. What are the custs complaining of- CEL? Driveability problems? Smoke? Sluggish? If it's not DTCs what leads you to the cooler? Please chime in with why these trucks are showing up with coolers clogged. Anyone cleaning them, or do they all get a double bundle? Thanks, guys, I appreciate it greatly. Keith sent me some excellent pics showing a clogged core. -

IDS VCM2 on a Test PCM
Bruce Amacker replied to Bruce Amacker's topic in 6.0L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
It wants to, but I'm afraid to try. Toward the end it wants you to start the engine to complete the process. What would happen if it couldn't? I know the IH guys flash ECMs with a setup like this all of the time.
