  1. 2. Geez, Best Buy has a Gateway netbook advertised in today's paper for $179 with XP on it. These little netbooks are great scan tool platforms.... Gateway - Netbook / Intel® Atom™ Processor / 10.1" Display / 1GB Memory / 160GB Hard Drive - Black Model: LT2514u | SKU: 1336719
  3. Which socket- IPR or 6.4 turbo? My Snappy guy just quoted me $51 for the IPR socket. I'm gonna buy it.
  4. I agree 110%. I promote them strongly in my classes and hand them out at every class I do. Like the coffee table books, I hope FMC follows suit and writes a similar sheet.
  5. I haven't done a SD or any box for quite a while. but when I had the shop we did lots of them. Here's my experience- putting a seal in it will only put off the inevitable return of the leak due to salt rot on the sector shaft. I learned to not replace just the seal but also to replace the sector shaft, which is really easy and does not require box R&R or complete disassembly in most cases (depending on access). If it were my own I'd look into a sector shaft. If it were too much money and I had a bit of time, I'd pull the sector shaft out, clean it, mike it to get an exact dimension where the rot line is, and get a seal sleeve from a HD truck parts supplier. Sleeves are a great way to properly prevent a leak from returning. IIRC, CR (Chicago Rawhide, a major seal supplier) part numbers for sleeves run like this- 99250 is a 2.500" seal sleeve. You might need a 99150 or something like that, have the HD dude look up the size for you. CR seal sleeves are machined on a lathe, not cheap- $20-30, but only .003-.005" thick and use the OE seal, not an oversize one. You clean the shaft with sandpaper, put a film of gasket sealer on the shaft, install the sleeve with the appropriate sized piece of pipe and a vise or press (maybe 30 lbs of force, but you DON'T want to hammer it- it must be pushed on!) and then peel the install flange off with a pair of dikes leaving only a thin perfect band where the rot line is. I put hundreds of them on in my life, they are REALLY cool. Good Luck!
  6. I'd change both sensors and overlay both harnesses, both pigtails are available from FMC (they're different). Maybe the indy shop used aftermarket sensors. Double check battery strength, cranking speed, powers and grounds to the PCM, etc.
  7. I've got more answers than questions because you didn't give us much info to start with. What are you comparing your scope waveforms to? Is the CMP wired backwards- that has happened before. Does the initial waveform movement go upwards on the positive pin? (indicating correct polarity) I'm assuming you flashed the PCM? Is there rust under the CMP sensor? Extended cranking can cause false CKP/CMP codes on nearly any Powerstroke, it's possible you are chasing the wrong problem. Does "Sync" and FICM Sync" change from no to yes? (I suggest changing it to a bar graph, usually FICM Sync changes just before Sync) If your Sync and FICM Sync change to yes, look at fuel pressure and ICP voltage, which should be .17v-.24v and quickly go to 1.5v+ cranking. What's your cranking RPM? A 6.0 should crank no slower than 175rpm cold. Does your waveform look like this? (pins 30 and 31) My biggest question is why was the FSE no help?
  8. I just looked up the pictures of the tool kit, the plastic box holding the adapters is clearly marked Rotunda 105-R0107, it contains two 122 to 104 pin adapters which are marked 122-EC46 and 122-T30. There is also an overlay sheet but I couldn't read if there is a separate PN on it. Good Luck!
  9. Which PN? These numbers are printed right on the BOBs themselves.
  10. I cudda swore I clicked "Diesel Engines" for the forum. Ooops.
  11. Shouldn't idle time have very little effect on DEF usage? NOx is only produced under high load levels, I'd think DEF usage would be zero even in long idle time situations.
  12. FYI: I had a meeting with a large gov't fleet customer Monday who enlightened me on some numbers he's seeing. Vehicle is a SCR equipped Cummins powered city transit bus, quantity 4. DEF usage among these 4 buses is 28 miles per quart- that's 112 miles per gallon! He's going through drums of DEF at an alarming rate.
  13. That wasn't me saying that- that was the tequila talking.
  14. Oil Analysis. Pull the sample yourself. Edit- Please elaborate on the lube pump problem you have seen on this/these engines. Would this not show in an oil sample?
  15. The difference between pressure and suction. The pickup tube is under suction which is much easier lose prime under (terminology?) than the HP screen which is under LPOP pressure. Who is the physics major here- isn't a perfect vacuum equal to -14.7PSI? So you only have 14.7PSI under perfect conditions under the pickup tube compared to 50-70PSI going through the HPOP screen.
  16. I think the reason that screen is so coarse is so it won't starve the HEUI system on a sub-zero start.
  17. Try XC3Z-9B959-AA. I also have XC3Z-9B659-AA in my notes but that might be a misprint. If you have an early 99 built before 12/17/98, and still have the original air box opening into the fender, you will also need the clean air hose, P/N XC3Z-9B659-AA, that runs from the air box to the collar above the valve cover. Good Luck!
  18. Personally, I don't seem to associate a particular mileage with STC failure, I've seen them at low mileage, high mileage, and anywhere in between. I do recommend replacing them as maintenance on ambulances and emergency equipment. If it were my own truck and I were in there I might consider putting an updated metal inlet screen under the oil cooler. Good Luck!
  19. There's no compression test adapter in the 6.4 tool kit. You're using the 6.0 adapter, right?
  20. It "should" prime itself but it might take a couple sets of batteries by the time it's done. How much fuel is in the tank? If it's low it will aggravate the concern, of course. In the past during similar circumstances I've disconnected the line at the FP and GENTLY applied shop air to the fuel tank vent hose to slightly pressurize the tank and help things along. You have to have a keen sense of what you're doing or this can go wrong. If you could apply a vacuum to the FF housing test port (above the WIF sensor) it would do the same thing. They did have some problems with the rear gear sets on those and there is an update, but I'm not sure if it would cause your complaint. Good Luck!
  21. Pat's (my wife) sister lives in Woodland Hills, CA, a suburb of LA. She's at the bottom of the hills separating WH from Malibu, and the kids don't want to walk the steep hills so they all flood her neighborhood at Halloween. Their usual count is 600+ kids before shutting the lights off, but the cool thing is that it's LA and a lot of the people are "in the industry", meaning the TV/entertainment/movie industry. Not only do the kids have super cool zillion dollar outfits but the parents do too. Pat's been going out there for at least 5 years just to see the freak show we call Halloween. So here I am, it's over now and I gave out about 40-50 granola bars. Wippidee do.
  22. My wife's out of town, I'll be at home handing out candy (actually this year it's granola bars) and hanging out. She made me promise not to wear my masks and scare little kids at the door. I've got a great devil's mask, and a full Frankenstein outfit.......
  23. Hey Guys: I was wondering what would happen if you removed the DPF and tricked the truck into regen. I didn't get the flames from the DOC I expected, but I did get 950F. Have Fun!
  24. Napa has a no questions asked policy on failures like that. Take it back, even though you didn't buy it. Good Luck!
