  1. I ordered a new screen from IH (suprisingly, they didn't have it in stock) and it came through as nylon.
  2. I've seen it and run it, and it's the quietest diesel I've ever heard. You can have the hood up and engine idling and hold a conversation in a normal voice standing right next to it. It's awesome. Component accessibility seems decent, with all of the major items located in the open. I have high hopes for this engine. There's very few negative things I can find, but the CKP reluctor I'm not thrilled about. It is a disc bolted between the crank and flywheel with 120 magnets built into a resin or phenolic disc. I'm thinking that if oil impurities attack this, it could degrade with very difficult diagnostics to go along with it. It triggers a regular Hall Effect sensor with a standard 5v square wave (60-2, 58 tooth) output.   4. On mechanical injection motors, yes. If one injector overfuels, it will knock hard like a broken piston. How do the Perdels look in scan data? There's a cutout box for disabling injectors on a 7.3, but you probably don't have one.

  8. That's a nice handy guide, but I remember showing it to my IH parts guy and he said there a lot of errors in it. Remember it's also 7+ years old, too. Have fun!
  9. Right. In weather like this, it should run right at 'stat temp, which should be in the low to mid 190s (IIRC). Double check your ECT with an IR gun. Good Luck!
  10. Running 215-222 ECT is your problem, it should be running under 200F in -15F ambient. Fix that and your fan cycling problem will be fixed. Possible problems include all the regular suspects- bad stat, clogged radiator, someone left a rag inside, etc. A cavitated cover is barely on my top ten list. I'd probably double check the temp at the sender with an IR gun, hang a new OE stat in it, and if that didn't fix it, I'd do a cooling system flow test. Does it have any coolant usage complaint? A cooling system pressure test on a road test might not be a bad idea. Look around the shop and see if you have one of these by chance: This cooling system flow tester tool would identify a (badly) cavitated cover, cavitated pump, blockage, loose impeller, cure ED and baldness. If you can't find a flow tester you're going to diagnose it using caveman methods- pull the WP and inspect, pull the rad and flow it with a garden hose, etc. I'm thinking this problem is linked to the real reason it needed a motor and head gaskets.   11. Several years ago when I was doing pre-testing for Midas, I gave the students a regular 15 question multiple choice test. The directions stated, "Do not answer questions one and two. Answer all other questions to the best of your ability." You wouldn't believe how many guys answered all of them....

From lmtruck.com: Ford Motor Co. released horsepower and torque ratings for the all-new diesel and gasoline engines that will power its forthcoming 2011 Super Duty models, and also released payload and towing capacities for the trucks. The new Power Stroke diesel, a turbocharged 6.7-liter unit that was designed in-house by Ford, has a maximum torque rating of 735ft.-lb. at 1,600 rpm, and 390 horsepower at 2,800 rpm. Those figures mark improvements of 85 ft.-lb. and 40 horsepower over the outgoing, Navistar-built 6.4 liter diesel. Ford said the new engine also delivers an average fuel economy improvement of 18 percent for pickups and up to 25 percent for chassis cab Super Duty models. The new engine is also capable of operating on B20 biodiesel, Ford said. Ford and Navistar ended their long-standing diesel engine supply agreement last year after an acrimonious battle over engine warranty claims. Ford is also introducing a new 6.2-liter V-8 gas engine with 385 horsepower and 405 ft.-lb. of torque – 85 more horsepower and 40 ft.-lb. of torque more than the current 5.4-liter V-8 gas engine. Ford said the engine will average 15 percent better fuel mileage that the 5.4 liter. The new engine is also compatible with E85 fuel Maximum available towing capacity for Super Duty pickups is 24,400 pounds, and 26,400 for chassis cab models. Get the Pro version, like I said above, Big 3 Domestic is $1200, updates are $50/yr. Include the full blown Asian and Euro for $2400 total, updates $150/yr.   16. Yes, the 7.3 is relatively low tech as far as scan tool requirements go. All aftermarket scanners (including all Snappy scanners) perform all functions on a 7.3.
  17. Here's the pictures that Blown 99 put up but was unable to post: Alliant power is selling new 6.0 injectors for $175-200 depending on source and PN, talk to Larry at STI for the best deal. He ships quickly and you'll have them the next morning. That injector tester connects similar to a breakout box between the FICM harness and FICM. It watches the movement of the spool when commanded and identifies a stiction problem very well. It is made by Hickok, who is headquartered here in Cleveland. I had several meetings last year with Hickok's CEO, president, VP, and head of technical research, as they wanted my input on various tools that they have in production or being developed. I'm watching the IPT tool with interest as Hickok and IH have a completely different view of this tool than I have. Does it identify a stiction problem? Yes, and quite accurately. I was impressed at the software that went along with it. The problem lies in the fact that they sold this to IH as an INJECTOR tester and feel it will identify bad INJECTORS in all ways. I had a heated debate with them about the fact that at least half of injector failures occur in the barrel/plunger/pintle/nozzle area, and therefore would not show up as failures with their stiction tester. The Hickok honchos would have no part of anyone telling them that their tool would not identify a bad INJECTOR (complete) and dismissed my input as bunk. If IH starts kicking warranty claims on the basis of this tool, or bases injector replacement solely on this tool, a lot of IH techs are going to be screwed. Hickok also gave me a couple of their scan tools which I was less than impressed with, they did well with the IPT but their scanners are way behind the times. If they don't get on the bandwagon and hire some competent field engineers who know how to use a scan tool they will be soon be history. Anyone who follows the financial papers in Cleveland won't need to be reminded of their state of affairs. It's too bad, because they have been in business selling automotive test equipment since the '20s IIRC.
  18. Yes, I have AE also and was involved with Jay writing the early versions of 6.0 software several years ago. I see Beevo (Bill Van Orden) regularly at the major training conferences. Bang for your buck, it's the best value in an aftermarket scan tool by far. Updates are only $50/yr for each continent (Domestic, Asian, Euro). The Pro tool right now is $1200 for Domestic and $2400 for Dom/As/Euro. I think Snap-On updates are almost $1000 per year.....
  19. Oddly enough, the only one I know of is at the Cleveland School Board. Even our local IH dealer takes them there to be cleaned. It's set up for the cartridge style DPF and I'm not sure if a 6.4 will fit in it. How far are you from Cleveland?

All of the KOEO, Buzz, KOER, Cyl contribution (non-graphical), output state, etc tests in the basic menu can be done on all PSD's by any decent aftermarket scan tool (must be CAN compatible for 6.0/6.4, but all late tools are). By "decent" I mean all brand name scanners and exclude $100 scan tools sold at cheapie auto parts stores. The biggest deficiencies that lie in aftermarket tools are all of the advanced level tests- cyl balance (graphing), bidirectional controls, EGR and turbo tests, flashing, full PID lists, communication with all modules, cyl cutout, etc. NGS PC does have a few of the optional tests- cyl balance graph and some bidirectional controls, but the program is so buggy I could not consider it reliable. For instance, when I commanded the IPR closed, it opened it 100%.

  23. From my notes: The ECM will de-rate the engine (reduce power) if the fuel temperature sensor (FTS) reads 194ºF or higher. The PCM may also derate if the ECT or other temps get out of range. The ECM: Energizes the electric coolant pump at 77 degrees fuel temp Turns it off at 68 degrees Increases fan clutch command at 151 degrees Derates engine at 194 degrees (fuel temp) (reduces fuel delivery to match cooling system performance) It is odd what triggers the truck into “derate” mode. For example: Exhaust temp is too high EGT open circuit EGRT sensor open circuit Low fuel pressure EOT exceeds 275 Oddly enough, if it is overheating it will keep running until it burns up! The radiator supplier was having some problems and a few bad radiators made it to the assembly line, which were replaced after the trucks were sold. One particular truck had a problem after the radiator was replaced: After having the system emptied and refilled, the truck was driven several times and the coolant was topped off. The customer complained of an intermittent lack of power since the radiator was installed. The tech graphed out CTS, EOT, and fuel temp and went for a ride. The FT was cycling up and down to the point of fuel derate. Realizing that the main radiator was recently replaced, the tech put a vacuum bleeder on the degas bottle and pulled a vacuum on the system, and was able to get over a gallon more coolant in the tank! After properly bleeding the cooling system, the performance problem was fixed. The problem was the engine reaching derate temperature and the PCM cutting back the fuel command. Rotunda 078-00497 (This isn't making 100% sense. I wonder if the tech also bled the secondary cooling system....) 20922 - 2008-2010 F-SUPER DUTY – Radiator coolant leaks and PCM derate strategy due to hyperextended thermostats. Some 2008-2010 SuperDuties with 6.4 engines may exhibit a lack of power without DTC’s high temperature gauge readings and reduced engine performance (PCM derate strategy designed for engine temperature protection) due to bad thermostats. Diagnose these by monitoring EOT and ECT. With the EOT at 195F drive the vehicle unloaded at 55-70MPH at a steady state while observing temperatures. If EOT is less than 8 degrees higher than ECT, and the coolant temp fluctuates approximately 5 degrees, the thermostats are functioning properly. Only replace the thermostats if the EOT exceeds ECT by greater than 8 degrees or if the ECT readings fluctuate 10-12 degrees every 30 seconds. Effective date 7-30-2009 Good Luck!
