  1. IH has many repair pigtails available at a reasonable price. They also have complete engine harnesses available, sometimes at a very cheap price. I've seen T444E (7.3PSD) harnesses as cheap as $80. You get lots of spare connectors when you buy a harness. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif Napa has more than a few available, too. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif
  2. Shop air would be better. Remember that a perfect vacuum is only negative 14.7PSI- much less than shop air. Maybe do them both if you're not sure, to check leakage in both directions. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif
  3. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/2cents.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/rofl.gif !
  4. Are we talking about the same guy here????? /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif
  5. I e-mailed Charles and asked him. I had it wrong- I thought it was a TSB and it wasn't. His response was that Ford came out with a test adapter for the 7.3 to vacuum/air check them. He just modified that idea, since they had no adapter for the 6.0, using a MityVac. He says it works quite well, as the bad injectors would not hold vacuum. I think I'll stroll down to the beach now. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif
  6. Not only have I watched quite a bit of the BJ auction, I also watched quite a bit of the RM auction lately. Rode my bike 10+ miles every day, went to the Keys and Key West for a few days, and enjoyed 70-85 degree weather the last 2+ weeks. It's 11pm and the A/C is still running here. Will be heading north in a few days to 20 degree weather. Brrr! I'm used to shorts and sandals right now. I am still running the phone and working a small bit each day, but not much. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/drinkingdude.gif Didn't have internet here at first, but found that if I sit at the couch in front of the TV I can hijack someone's unsecured wireless. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smirk.gif As for Keith, what's wrong with 3 vacations in a couple of months? /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif
  7. Yea, I saw this too, but he's talking about big bore engines. I wonder how fast those 855's turned in my shop when they ran away. The roar was deafening, and one blew the belts off.... /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cover.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif
  8. All diesels are interference engines, remember that the combustion chamber is usually in the top of the piston and the head is flat. Look in a WSM to verify if you want, by looking at the pictures of pistons and the head. Good Luck! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif
  9. Charles Ledger shot this picture of a vacuum test that is described in a TSB letter. It does work. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif
  10. One of my guys (obviously younger) was looking up an oil filter and commented, "What's a Chevy Vega?" I was laughing for a minute until I realized how old that made me.... /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/frown.gif
  11. Hey Jim, is there any way you could document this with pictures, both of the harness, and any evidence of a programmer? It would be a good addition to my 30 minute spiel on "why not to make aftermarket modifications." Thanks! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif
  12. A literary marvel, no doubt, but my BS detector is ringing at full volume. I don't dispute the runaway, but the valve springs will float well below the 11K claimed. How would he know the RPM, anyway? The tach only goes to 5K and I can tell you from first hand experience the last thing you're doing in a situation like this is to document RPM. I have had two runaways in my shop, both Cummins 855's, and they are scary, but for it to cut the front clip off is BS. At most would be a grenaded short block with components hanging out. In my opinion, the flywheel would last beyond the valve spring's RPM limit. Even if the flywheel let go and made it through the bellhousing, (highly unlikely) the parts would be stopped by the cowl. If this story were true, the pictures of it would be all over the internet and FMC would have a recall going to install DDA style mousetraps on the intakes. As for the guy who wrote this, he's an idiot. It's people like this that the press like to quote and the basis for many "urban legends". /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/2cents.gif
  13. I bet any pump shop could do the turbo, but I wouldn't be concerned about it until there was a problem. I'm sure Larry will look into it for you. If you're worried about the turbo, hold it still with a wood dowel while you fire the engine up until it gets oil pressure. I know nothing about these engines, but I'm guessing there's higher worries on the list than the turbo. If I looked at it, I would not try to fire it up on location. I'd drag it back and fill the FF with Stanadyne first. Is it a belt drive cam? Pay attention to it and the idlers if you want to avoid problems. Good Luck! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif
  14. "Maybe" I have found someone who is as much of a tool junkie as me. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif Box score, including what I owned when I sold the shop: 2 IDS complete One PDS (now gone /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif ) 3 NGS's 3 ProLink's with 25 cartirdges and an IBOB (dead horses, not but big $ years ago) 7 laptops with IH software, 7 Deuscth cable kits (I teach software classes) AutoEnginuity Ease Car-Code E-Scan So much OE software I can barely list it, and multiples, too: all IH software, AllisonDoc, Bendix, Wabco, Meritor, etc, etc. Genisys Mastertech with dozens of adapters and cartridges Tech 2 with all the bells DRB3 with all the bells Another GM scanner I can't remember the name on Several scopes and 4 gasses. I guarantee when I sold the shop were were better equipped than any aftermarket or dealer shop in the county. He got the Tech2, DRB, ProLinks, and one of the NGS's. He who dies with the most toys........!
  15. I can't remember exactly right now, as I haven't tried it for several weeks. I think it's the "color" thing- I picked the wrong color for my network, and the VCM card reads "Red". My network is labeled Black, and for my life I couldn't figure out how to change the network name so the PC looked for the right color. It sees the VCM card and shows "connected" in the lower right, but the IDS isn't recognizing it. After messing a few hours, I gave up. I did have all firewalls and AV off. I'm on vacation now, but I do have the whole thing with me as I did a class down here, and demo'd it for another customer. Maybe I'll take some screen captures and put them up. Maybe one of you gurus could walk me through it.... /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif
  16. That WAS correct "some time back". IH did offer the o-ring, spacer and circlip for a short time several years ago, but dropped them quickly for some reason. I assume they had techs repairing blown out items and not abrasion wear o-rings. If they did, certainly they'd be back on a hook quickly. The last time I checked stock on those PN's, there were 0 nationwide. Sorry! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif
  17. Then what's their decision, change the branch tube on all of them? That's hard to believe. I bet that was ONE guy at Hotline, not their general consensus. IH says to bend the branch tube back. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/rolleyes.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif
  18. Ditto. We also load tested one to 300+lbs. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif Have Fun! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif
  19. I can't give you a pass/fail number for FT but I was going to suggest swapping injectors also. Not a quick test, but I'm willing to bet the injector is junk. I'm not betting it helps your balance problem, though. Sit in the driver's seat and pay very close attention while you scream the motor up and down from open to closed throttle several times. Pay close attention to how the steering wheel/floorboards feel as the engine passes through the suspicious RPM on it's way DOWN. If you feel a quiver while the RPM is on it's way down, the problem is definitely mechanical (balancer, flywheel, etc.). If you don't feel a problem on the way down it could be fuel. The reason is that the engine is in fuel cut while coming down and any shaking will be mechanical. This takes a good "feel" for the shake as you have only a fraction of a second to sense it as the RPM level decreases. Compare with a known good truck if you're not sure what I'm talking about. I have diagnosed many balance problems this way over the years to determine if they're mechanical in nature. Good Luck! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif
  20. I'll remind you that FMC never released the CAN bidirectional code to ETI, which means that no aftermarket scan tool has bidirectional controls on a Ford CAN vehicle besides basics like KOEO, KOER, and buzz. You'll find the Nemisys is very limited in it's abilities just like AE on all CAN Fords, like all aftermarket scan tools. Did you talk the Boss into getting an IDS yet? That tool is not only the best I've ever used, but it's ROI is almost immediate if you charge an hour for reflashes. Have your boss call me and I'll convince him. Quit F'ing around with aftermarket scan tools on CAN Fords. It's the biggest mistake you can make. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif
  21. Did you crank it a while with the oil filter out? Perhaps it is an air lock in the system not allowing the low pressure side to bleed. If you did that, overfill the crankcase and jack it up a bit to help the LPOP bleed. Other than the remote chance of the pressure regulator sticking in the front cover, I'm not aware of any pattern failures. Good Luck! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif
  22. I use Tracer products and their large 110v spotlight, and use 2-3 (4 oz?) bottles in diesel engines depending on the crankcase capacity. I've seen the smaller flashlight type lights that run on batteries but have not used them. I have my doubts compared to the big 'ol 110v. Dye is the way to go for any leak, I'm sure that's no news. Good Luck! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif
  23. I'm jealous. Mine still isn't working, and my PC skills aren't good enough to get it connecting. Plus I'm on vacation right now. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif
  24. Did you try pulling the belt and see if it went away? Good Luck! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif
  25. Good info here. In addition, I've seen the switching valve become restricted on the return side and cause this exact problem. Pull the return line off of the top of the injection pump and gently try to blow air through it back to the tank. I have an old 6.9/7.3 lift pump that I use for a mechanical test. That's a 3" muffler clamp spread out for the second handle, and clear hose from Home Depot. Attach it to the lift pump suction hose and activate it by hand. Look for good flow and air in the clear lines which indicate problems. This not only works well on an old PLN system , but also on almost any diesel system on the road. Good Luck! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif
