  1. Hey guys, I'm pretty un-familiar with these engines and being the only diesel tech in the shop I'm just looking for a place to start. Truck has a pretty bad coolant leak, external. I couldnt pin point where the leak is, so I put dye in it. there is dye all over the front cover, in the engine valley, down the back of the engine (more on the driver side) and actually running off the left exhaust manifold. To me it's leaking somewhere in the valley, but I havnt done more than a cooling fan to a 6.4 yet, what all is up top to leak coolant? From what I can tell it's none of the coolant hoses on top of the engine. Thanks again guys, Brandon
  2. Ugh, the saga continues. Turns out this pig only had 37PSI on the flow tester, put filters in and got 39PSI out of it. Did the tests, came up with a pump, still only 41PSI. Put a regulator on it and brought the pressure up where it should be. Still smoked. Hotline had me "super heat" the EGR cooler by holding the valve open and running the truck at 1200RPM for 15 mins, then re-test on truck, passed once again. Now they had me "put one bank of injectors in, if problem gets better, replace other bank. If problem does not get better the problem injector may have been missed, replace other bank". So they have me throwing 8 injectors at this thing, guess we'll see how that works out tomorrow.
  3. VVT Test from this truck, I dont see anything out of the ordinary, maybe someone else does.
  4. EGR Valve was no help, although now it passes the tests with flying colors. I pulled the secondary filter to check the fuel. Looked/smelled like diesel, didnt seem to have any gas in it. Smelled the fuel through the filler neck as well, didnt seem to smell like gas. Thing thing is a dog off the line, could a sticking turbo cause white smoke?
  5. Truck came back just as I was leaving today. Cust is not happy with the smoke, wants it fixed. I ran the EGR test on it quick, it did pop out of MAP spec like 3 times durring the 2nd running test, but it did not fail it. The valve was hanging low on the position test, but again did not fail. Maybe I should just try a valve in this thing. Now it has now power from a stop, then all at once comes in. Ran a boost test on it as well, only 1.9psi with a hot engine.
  6. Just checking Bruce, I didnt know and though maybe I was WAY off, but this truck is okay.
  7. Guy just bought the truck, took it to another (non dealership) shop for the white smoke. They told him the EGR cooler was cooked, and he brought it in for warranty work. This truck runs flawless, it just seems like on "tip in" it rolls the white smoke, but only for a little bit. Bruce, when your looking for the MFDES @ <14mg, is that .14mg? Power balance is even, and picking off the injectors seems to affect each cyl equally. Thanks again guys, Brandon
  8. Nothing about adding coolant. EOT/ECT is only about 4-5 degree split on the 2 road tests that I was watching them. EGR system does pass the EGR test. Checked for excess oil in the CAC tubes, and they were clean. I pulled the IAT 2 sensor, it had build up, cleaned it off but made no change. Ford is saying that the white smoke may be coming from this truck not having a cat. converter, any thoughts on that? Thanks again guys, Brandon
  9. Guy comes in with an '06 F250, Says its blowing white smoke, had it somewhere else and they said it needs an EGR cooler. I get it to check out, go driving, it only puffs some white smoke when on hard accel. It doesnt dump out like I've seen in the past with EGR coolers. I get it in to test it, it's still hot so I pull the EGR valve for shits and giggles. It's coked up a little, but nothing much, AND it's dry. The truck cools down and I do the "on vehichle EGR cooler test". It holds 20/in vacuum for 15 mins, then I let it go for another 5, and it doesnt change. Any possibility that this thing needs an EGR cooler? The TSB doesnt have me doing anything else with the EGR cooler after it passes the on truck test.
  10. Found it, I'm not afraid to admit when I overlook something. Intercooler side tank blown off. Check the simple stuff first guys!
  11. Checked the fuel filters, the primary was pretty clogged up, replaced it, now the truck will go to 3500RPM in park, but no more. The truck doesnt drive any different. As long as you keep your foot out of this thing it's not bad, but if you go to give it anything over about 1/4 throttle it just starts putting out the white smoke. If you hold it wide open on the road it makes 5 PSI of boost, no more. Then it starts chugging and puffing and going to shit. Ran the injector electrical self test, they all clicked good and strong. Thanks again guys, Brandon
  12. Intake/Exhaust is aftermarket on this truck, K&N looks good and clean, there is no cat on this truck either. Back to it this morning. That PPT really blows for the P2292, mentions nothing of these other possible problems. Thanks for the help guys, Brandon
  13. Finally got back to this truck. mchan68, truck will only go to 3K RPM, then starts dumping white smoke. Checked fuel pressure with the flow tester, with the tester "open" it only has 42 PSI, min spec is 45.
  14. 2004 6.0 late build In for no power, MIL on. EBP sensor was only reading 6psi KOEO, put a sensor in, fixed that concern. Still no power, had no boost detected code P2262. Failed boost test miserably, hooked manual gauge to MAP hose, re ran boost test, none being made. Checked the turbo quick, spins freely, started truck up and turbo does spin. AAAAAAAAAAAnyway, I'm heading through pinpoint test KA, got to step KA14, checking the VGT, when commanded to above 70% the openings close up, then when put back to 0, the openings upen up. Is that what I'm looking for in this pinpoint test? Customer stated that he bought this truck knowing it had problems. Took it to another shop, had head gaskets, EGR cooler, EGR Valve, and had the turbo disassembled and de coked. Maybe I'm looking at a problem with how they assembled the turbo? Thanks again for the help guys, Brandon
  15. I talked to the car lot that has it, the owner used it to haul x-mas trees, ran it out of fuel once and hasnt been right since. They say it starts up and runs rough for like 20 mins then it smooths out and runs fine. It's 3 hours away from me, and the price IS right sooooooo I may just make the trip up and take a peek at it. I'm sure it'll tow alot better than my '78 e-350 box van w/ a 460ci in it LOL.
  16. Hey guys, I'm still pretty green on working on these diesel's, 7.3's in particular just because we don't get any in for drivability. Anyway, I found a box van that I'd like to buy, it's an 01 with a 7.3 and 177,000 miles, anything I should look for in particular? Just bring an IDS along and run some self tests? Let me know what you guys think, Thanks in advance, Brandon
  17. Finally got around to putting this harness in. What all do I have to pull to get the connectors that come down in front of the engine? Looks like one goes to the AC and one to the P/S pump, do I need to pull the compressor and pump to get to them? This is my first harness job, it dont seem tooooooo bad.
  18. Keith, What all PID's do you want to see from a screen shot? And also, do I just take a screen shot and post it like a normal picture or is there a better way? Thanks for all the help guys, I'm on a 6.4 that needs T-Stats now, but once thats done it's back to this 6.0
  19. Went on another road test after lunch, got this thing to act up twice, and I was able to grab recordings with the IDS of the event. Cleared the codes before road test and, P0603, P2122, P2138, and P2139 came back. While surging: FICM SYNC: Yes SYNC: Yes VGTLRN_OK: No AP Inputs are steady @ WOT EBP 24.5-25.5 PSI EGRDC: all over the place EGRVP: all over the place IAT1 and IAT2 reading steady ICP: all over the place ICP_DES: not very stable, but not terrible IPR: follows ICP_DES MAF: all over the place MAP: not very stable, but not terrible MGP: 23-29 PSI Dont know if any of that stuff will throw up any flags for you guys or not.
  20. Hey guys, Got an 03 in with the customer complaining of a surge under load. I road tested with him and got the truck to do it one time in a half hour. Under WOT around 2000RPM it will just start to surge and buck, but eventually power through it. This thing has a P0069 in it (map coralation) and 3 codes in it for the AP sensor. Cleared them out and re test, none came back. The truck wont do it for me again though. Looking back through some old posts on here though, the VGT_LRN was NO and from my searching it looks like I should maybe check that out as a cause of my concern. Let me know what you guys think, Brandon
  21. I have a truck in my bay that is getting an EGR cooler, and that coolant smells like ass, but this thing was pumping alot of smoke too. Didnt really take notice to coolant smell on head gasket trucks, but maybe I just didnt take notice to it.
  22. Ford told me to put a harness on it. I'm at school all next week, so it'll be there waiting :-(
  23. 07 E-350 (econoline's blow) Came in with MIL on and a P0271. Pinpoint test "P" led me to a faulty injector, after getting to like P5 it sent me back to P2 and the injector itself failed the resistance test. Replaced the injector, MIL and P0271 came back. Contacted the hotline, they told me to do some black majic before condeming the FICM, came up with a FICM after their diag. Replaced FICM, MIL and P0271 came back. I know the wiring is good because I made sure to check and double check the wiring when I had the injector out and the connectors were easy to get to. Any ideas guys, Thanks in advance, Brandon
  24. I do all of the remote starts in at our dealer (wow, only diesel tech and the remote start guy, I'm lucky) and I would NEVER use scotch locks on an install. It's not always the easiest to put the module up under the dash, but I do my best. Those pictures are horrible. Anyway, I had the same trouble with an aftermarket remote start system on a fivehundred. It wasnt powering up the cluster/fuel gauge and caused a MIL
  25. After putting the ICP on it does re-start hot, no problem.
